A good thing is to start sprinting at intervals, if you are just running at a steady pace now. Nothing crazy, just a sprint for 50 yards or so every couple of minutes. That increased my time and I feel like I can run farther. Or you could try ankle weights (1 and a 1/2 pound per leg) and run like that. That works too.

Squats are good, and so is leaping. Do about 15 leaps in a row, and you'll feel the burn.

If you are in that Iraq heat... Damn. Make it home safe. They couldn't let you get back stateside for FleetWeek or nothin?

I went to see my girl's graduation and the dates just came out to be the same. I used to go to FleetWeek a lot because my dad was in the Navy. The first thing I wanted to be was pilot for the Blue Angels. But I heard it was off the damn meat rack. Women everywhere you look.

if you can, run with a partner and tell stories to each other or make some up as you go. or sing songs. it will really builds ur endurance. the first couple times its really gonna be challenging but it definitely works. when i ran cross country, we would take turns telling stories on 8-10 miles runs. plus it makes the run go by alot faster.

thx stace..altho i usually run alone....i can use what your saying about keeping your mind occupied....the only ploblem i have with telling stories or singing cadence is that i wouldn't be controlling my breathing...and every breath counts 4 me ya dig

so u saying lifting weight(meaning squats) would work against you..when trying to establish a better run routine....because i was gonna start lifting weights this week....asfar as upper body...i do about 400 pushups every other night and about 200 situps as well maybee i'll stick 2 the curent script 4 a while:smoker:

yeah

because if you get too muscular legs it's going to be hard for you to run for long distances.

if you wanna get better at running, just do sets of 10-15 reps in the gym with upper body and run 3-4 times a week

your legs will get stronger as you run, you dont need weights

they'll adapt to how far you're running and all that ****

i've never lifted weights with my legs in my life and the last time I squatted (just to see my max) i could do 375

yea thats exactly what it does. it takes you out of a comfortable rhythmic breathing and forces you to find a pattern for when you are struggling to breathe. lol sounds worse that it is but it really does build endurance if thats what ur looking to do.

but if you looking to just get stronger when running i say run up hills. find a course that has alot of hills in it.

I'll give you two great pieces of advice

1. Apply sprinting. What that does it work on your fast-twitch muscle fibers that you almost completely ignore when pacing yourself. When you get to the point when you run for distance and your slow-twitch muscles stop performing, your body recruits one or both of your fast-twitch muscles to help you grind out more distance.

2. And seriously try this - when breathing, and you must learn to breath properly when running - expand your stomach rather than your chest. This helps maximize your lungs efficiency and thus you will see an immediate difference.

And there is nothing wrong with lifting weights. Actually I suggest wall squats where you form a 90 degree angle and while holding on to a pair of light dumbbells (try 15s first for your first time - trust me). Hold for 30 seconds, take a mini break (no more than 10 seconds) and repeat two more times.

Strengthening your hammys help for running.

i dont think you run 8 miles a day... or rather how could you not run for 16 min in march but in june you running 8 miles. im not saying its impossible but throughout all the runners i seen i never seen anyone do that everyday... i mean 20 mins at 6.5 is around 2 miles so you do the math... i mean at times i goto the gym 3 times a day, sometimes twice which isnt always effective, muscles need time to heal...i run 20 to 25 mins a day but even if i go back to run your body just cant handle too much pressure like that and if youre exerting yourself im pretty sure you'll come to a breaking point... I love running tho... its like heaven... sometimes i feel like a machine... i havent done any marathons yet but even when i weigh in at 230-240 i always was a runner... running felt better at a heavier weight believe it or not ...
