I was conflicted about whether to throw on Funkadelic, but since you did, I must say
Maggot Brain
Take It to the Stage
i used to dig every time i die, but i kinda stopped listening to that screamo stuff, the subject matter was to narrow

yeah those are my 2 favorite Funkadelic albums right there, i liked them better when they were psychedelic funk rather than dance music. Every Time I Die got sick ass lyrics. Plus it's the perfect drunk music.

I would definitely consider Maggot Brain rock. Not sure about Let's Take It To The Stage though. I'm inclined to think that when the Bootsy and Catfish Collins signed on, they changed the rhythm and overall sound of Funkadelic--bringing more of James Brown's ideas to the table. "No Head No Backstage Pass" rock? Yes. "Be My Beach"? Not so sure.
