Which is better? Does it matter?
I just switched from after work to before work. 4:30 pm yesterday was ROUGH. Felt like I was about to pass out.
i get up and hit the gym soon after, i don't even eat till i get home.

Morning due to the fact that, that is when your motabolisim is at its highest peak
Testosterone levels are at their highest upon waking and diminishes slowly as the day progresses, but strength peaks during the later hours so it depends on what your aiming for really. If growth and mass is a goal then try to lift during the morning, if your training for strength aim for later times.
But don't get it twisted, you will see results regardless of when you lift, certain aspects just may come faster depending on the time you lift (mass first or strength first).

After a year of getting up at 0100 to 0300hrs, I can't make myself get up before 0900. Afternoon or early evening is actually best for me.

that's not true, your metabolism will speed up after your work out so it really doesnt matter when u work out. your metabolism is a little higher during the day, that's why it's good to work out in the evening, speed it back up so that you can better process dinner without having the food just sit on/in you.
