I'm looking to start making beats as a hobby. I'm not neccessarily trying to make a career out of it and pro-tools seems complicated from when I visited their website. Does anyone have any ideas?

Or,

If you can't recommend a multi-track recorder, what beginners software programs can I use?

as far as multi tracks go if you are doing it for a hobby. there is a 4 track digital recorder made by zoom for $199 or fostex has an 8 track for $349.
As far as software you can't go wrong with fruity loops basic ed for $99
