All their albums have that one high energy song and the rest is all happy go lucky De La Soul potholes in my lawn organic commune type shyt...

I used to dislike them majorly, then I saw them play live. Long story short, they are a great band.

for a 2 man group, the white stripes are decent... even if they aren't the best at their respective instruments...

instinct blues was my favorite off the get behind me satan album..

Skanky is right. Their live shows are amazing. And yeah I like the band, they're good.

So true. I wish they broke some other way, though. But Whit Blood Cells was a great f*cking rock album.

I didn't say he sucked... I'm saying when I think of Great guitarist, Jack White doesn't come to mind... at least not yet..

Their "gimmick" (and that does belong in quotes) can seem really, really annoying.

But they're a great if unconventional rock act, one of the few newer ones going, and they've put together an impressive string of 4/5 albums. "I'm Lonely but I Ain't That Lonely Yet" is my pick for best song of the last 3-4 years (I know y'all will disagree).

Their big drawback is that they live mostly like it's 1969 and fall almost completely in the Velvet Underground's shadow in a few different aesthetic ways--but that's also part of what makes them good.

What did y'all think of the Raconteurs joint Jack did? I thought it was great.

Strangely, I miss Meg's seemingly-random and just-a-second-offbeat drumming.

What's their gimmick? I wouldn't even count their shyt as rock. 98% of their music has no swag.

I'd call it blues rock, and I enjoy it... even if I only own about 12 of their songs. I like the rawness and Jack White has a decent enough voice for that type of music. And he's a pretty good songwriter too.

No, I'm not joking. I wouldn't stop listening to Fugazi but I think I'd feel a certain kind of way about Ian Mackaye and it'd definitely influence to some degree the way I felt about Fugazi.

I guess it depends largely on context--there's not a shortage of reasons to dislike hip-hop. But if someone is on there high-horse is on one of those generic 'there's not talent involved in hip-hop' rants it holds little weight in my opinion.

I just thought maybe you had specific reasons for thinking it was stupid. Seemed like an interesting thing to talk about.

The number of people in hip hop making millions consistently can probably be counted on your hand.

If hip hop is your plan A, and you have no plan B, you are a dumb ass.

What does that have to do with what is being talked about?

You mention money and Cool points out how not everyone is caking like that. Then you point out hip-hop is more than what MTV says. How does that make any sense?

It just seems ridiculous and pointless to me to completely write off a band just because of one of the members viewpoints on a certain subject like that. I can understand not agreeing, and having some trouble with it, but to completely say "f*ck it" to a band based strictly on that reasons seems extremely ignorant.

Well, most of the time personal opinions get passed down to their fans, so they have the same attitude, so if I gotta deal with that attitude from their fans too, I don't like the artist. PERFECT example is Black Label Society and their redneck metal attitude, that gets passed down to their fans and I gotta deal with that, so I now hate BLS>

 @ you drawing all your "personal opinions" from your favorite rappers... that is tooo funny.

Hip hop may be many things... but it's definitely NOT a good way to support yourself, or a lucrative business venue

Even CAMRON said aspiring rappers should look to some other way to make money

Plus HIP HOP provides such a limited view of the world... for it to consume your whole existence and thought patterns is HEARTBREAKING

There's so much more to life... you're really missing out, "bro"

man I feel I'm on the punkplanet forums with all you "hipster" bohemians taking shots at me.

Hip-hop consists of elements, some of these elements or add-on elements such as:

-dj'ing or beatmaking
-art/tagging/graffiti
-mc'ing or ghostwriting
-political awareness and activism
-fashion

i have done or am doing these. they consume my free time, and hopefully, there's a future there for me with the art thing and college, if not, politics would be the back up, with everything that entails.

hip-hop and it's elements have been a part of my life as soon as I discovered them, and have helped me directly or indirectly though tough times.

when people attack the culture, such as politicians, moral figures, and yes, other musicians, that brings up a hostile feeling from me.

Jack White basically said that no hip-hop was original and it hadn't changed since 1988. First of all, i think it's ironic, that someone who bases his whole career on the sound of late 60's garage and r n b bands, has any place to deem ANYTHING orgininal or not. Second if you can't see the changes and differences with hip-hop from 88 to now, i think you have different reasons for hating hip-hop, because a career musician shouldn't be so ignorant.

i apoligize that i'm trying to combine what i love into making a living possibly. i'm sorry that i'm not sitting an office, fukking off on SOHH instead of working my brain numbing job. for this i am sorry.

4 elements, since you're so textbook.

. Breaking
. DJ'ing
. Emceeing
. Graffiti

There's no "add on" elements. The rest of that sh*t is just called "Life."
