Global – Scientific Nigerian
Global – Scientific Nigerian
Review by Daniel Thomason
Continuing the trend of good rap talent emerging from the Austin, Texas, scene is Global, a b-boy turned rapper who is bringing a fresh sound with his "Scientific Nigerian" release.
Starting the CD off with "Technique", Global's lyrical dexterity and smooth flow are thrust to the forefront. This is not the typical Texas rap of candy paint, codeine, and trunk popping, as Global's intelligent wordplay forces you to listen to what he says rather than simply bobbing your head along with the track.
Throughout the album, his content stays fresh and intriguing. Whether it's telling tales of drug dealers losing their life or spitting some of his more abstract flows, his style is a welcome break from the majority of rap that permeates the mainstream and underground circuits nowadays.
Tracks like "The Revival" featuring Mike Flow, Mirage, Alpha 20/20, and JP, show what Global does so well – giving you real hip-hop over laid back beats that make you remember the good old days of rap. He says it best in the track himself: "Hip-hop is our culture, so we bringin' it back / to the street before the days of the bling and the crack".
Other songs on the album find him giving social commentaries, such as the fluid strings and drums driven title track "Scientific Nigerian". Effortlessly he transitions his message intro something more egocentric, such as the boasting cut "Composure" featuring DOS and Just Born, which finds all three MC's laying down perfectly raw yet refined verses.
As mentioned earlier, Global is at his peak when working his lyricism over the laid back, seemingly trip-hop inspired beats found on the album. On the tracks "Post Mortem Pt. I" and its companion "Post Mortem Pt. II" featuring Just Born and Rance, he weaves tales of life and death over a dark, haunting beat with an equally creepy sampled hook. Just Born and Rance both contribute great verses with their features and it is very cool to hear two different versions of the same song on the same album.
Another of the album's best cuts is the Alpha 20/20 produced "Burn Slow", which also features Alpha contributing a verse. A drum heavy beat that could easily pass for a track by the classic trip-hop group Portishead gives a great background for their abstract tale, which goes from a drug deal to an inspirational message of perseverance to the passage of time. Although that may seem strange, it comes out perfectly in the song and shows what Global is truly capable of.
While this album will probably not appeal to fans of the standard Texas rap we have all come to know, it is a great treat for the ears of those with an open mind willing to give it a listen. Global's unique, almost ahead of his time sound and style will surely please all fans of true hip-hop while undoubtedly gaining him many new listeners in the process.
8/10
