disagree-i think he murdered everyone on "classic"
who then is it that you consider to be the PlayStation 2?
and i feel that analogy to be faulty
games consoles dont evolve after theyve been bought, like a ps2 doesnt eventually become a ps3 after a while
a human however can always keep bettering itself

but the graphics have gotten better over time. Rakim laid the foundation for what an even greater emcee can strive to be, he was ahead of his time in the 80's. But looking back, Rakim (those consoles) eventually gave way to what later became our form of enjoyment. THAT nukka just cant compete with anyone(greats) since early 90's.

:thumbsdow Wrong. Actually rap music has regressed overall lyrically from the early 90s. Sorry, the VG analogy doesn't work.

You're right when you say that there are some MCs today that rhyme as well or better than Ra in his prime, BUT I think you are missing the point. The reason that n!ggas put Ra in their GOAT/ Top lists is because he is the reason that their favorite rapper raps as well as he does. Ra singlehandedly changed the way that rappers rapped. You can't discredit revolutionary n!ggas from the past because they have new dudes that have surpassed them lyrically. Like for instance, Bill Russell was a revolutionary NBA center. He did things on the defensive end of the court that changed the game. Since Bill their have been alot of centers that played as well or better than him (and if he played today he probably wouldn't be as successful as he was), but you always gotta pay homage to Bill cause he laid the foundation. HE MADE THEM EXECUTE THAT WELL. Callin' n!ggas dumb fvcks for puttin' the God on their GOAT lists is one of the major reasons that today hip hop is as fvcked up creatively as it is. You gotta represent for the n!ggas that did it RIGHT first.

That analogy doesn't work because Hip Hop artists aren't judged based on their technical skills, it's all about image. It would be better if you compared the Harlem Globetrotters to the And 1 Mixtape Tour.
wait until the 7th seal comes out, you'll see the god still has it, all his guest appearances since the hoodlum soundtrack and albums like the 18 letter and master should have already proved that

but music/artistry is more timeless than sports. sports depends more on the physical limits of a human, and we all get old every day. Rakim's influence is undeniable, and i stated that. but krs, ll, nas, hova, are all emcees that did it better longer. rakim was just the first to come with something that might make you break your rewind button. but that nygga got stuck in time and didnt evolve at all.....real talk

To Make Sense Of My Post Is Rakim Greatness Should Never Be Questioned But He Can Be Exposed For Not Bringing It Now. What He Do Is No Longer Impressive To The Masses Because A 5 Year Old Can Make A Rap Album Now So It Numbs His Gratness To People Who Weren't Growin Up In The 80-90's .
You Will Never Convince A Young N1gga Ra Is A Top 5 When Everybody In The Game Uses Multies Just Like Dr J No Longer Amazes Young Dudes After Mj,kobe, And Labron,etc.... What Did Dr J Do Better?? Nothing So To Youngins' It Is Unimpressive
What Kills Longivty In Rap Is The Competivness Of It, If It Was Just Simply Music Groups Wouldn't Break Up As Much As They Did
Name 5 Groups From The 80-90's That Haven't Broke Up??

but imo, greatness is also based on the timelessness of the artist not just the influence. The fact that Mic Fiend is still a classic is great, but to not be able to translate skills over any amount of time is suspect.

Rakim's lyricism improves with time. Check his verse on the song Classic or that song he did with Canibus, they prove he can still kill sh*t and hang with some of the top MCs today.

You're right about the physical limitations of man, but you also forget that mans mind changes also. When Ra was spittin' those rhymes he was in his 20's-early 30's. He was at a different juncture in his life mentally. What's appealing to the greater hip-hop audience is something that is harder for an older man to relate to because he's changed psychologically. Not sayin' that limitation (limitation only in the scope of relating to the younger hip-hop audience) can't be overcome, but it would be a big task to do so. Name the top MCs that went into the latter parts of their 30's/ early 40's that still was considered a TOP MC to the younger generation? Their ain't much, G. Even Jay has been gettin' away from some of the stuff that was appealing to the younger audience, because he's getting up there in age.

point taken. but greatness in music/artistry are different that sports, is my argument. athletes from a physical aspect have gotten bigger/stronger and thats been proven. so sure a ray lewis from today would dominate back then but its not for sure whether wilt would give somebody in the league 100 in 2007. i would bet everything against it. but great legendary poets, musicians, painters, writers have been able to translate time because the physical or techincal aspects have not really changed. its more a brain, creative think in dealling with artistry. smell me? no homo

No doubt, but I think Bone$ argument is that the n!ggas that are usually in n!ggas Top 5 are better lyrically than Ra, and I gotta agree with that. Biggie? Yep. Nas? Yep. Jigga? Yea. There aren't alot of dudes today that are better but the ones that are usually placed in GOAT lists are better, in my opinion. Ain't sayin' Ra still ain't dope tho.

great point my doogie. but our TRUE great emcees are the ones that with age will still hold an aire of creativity/skill that will translate a lot better than those who just were "most influential." Nas @ 40 Jay @ 40, greats in a lyrical sense if they choose to be. shyt nas said he'll play vegas when he's an ole head. our problem is many of our legends were killed b4 reaching any type of lyrical/creative peak. smh

I AGREE WITH YOU FOR ALL THE ARTS BUT HIP HOP
YOU LOSE YOUR YOUNG AND HUNGRY EDGE AND UNLESS WE CHANGE THE WAY HIPHOP IS JUDGED AN ACCEPT AS A WHOLE MATERIAL FROM OUR OLDER RAPPERS IT WILL ALWAYS BE A YOUNG MANS GAME
HIP HOP HAS BEEN AROUND COMMERCIALLY FOR DAMN NEAR 30 YEARS

what makes Rakim stand out from all these studio gangsters & rappers who make their careers off disses is his lyrics & the fact he is doesn't claim to be something he isn't, for example, Pac claimed he was a Gangster yet in that Resurrection film he said he tried selling drugs for a week & the OG of the hood said stick to music
Rakim has been at the top of the game for 20 years
he ain't released an album in years yet fans still fiendin' for some lyrical crack

good fukn point. snoop, cube, dre, e-40. I think its cause their certain skill is skill mixxed with the flow itself. East coast always had a larger emphasis on what was being said as opposed to maybe how it was being said, i.e. west coast legends.
