I stole this thread from another forum... and I realize this is not exactly a high-traffic or 'happenin' place, but I still thought it might be fun to ask:

Who are the most prominent artists/bands/groups in your music collection (or on your mp3 player)?

Judging from my ipod, I get these results:

Miles Davis - 45 albums (560 tracks)
Prince - 25 albums (290 tracks)
John Coltrane - 25 albums (180 tracks)
Parliament/Funkadelic - 20 albums (190 tracks)
Bob Marley & the Wailers - 15 albums (150 tracks)
Herbie Hancock - 15 albums (75 tracks)
Fela Kuti - 15 albums (50 tracks)
Nina Simone - 10 albums (180 tracks)
Lee Perry & the Upsetters - 10 albums (135 tracks)
James Brown - 10 albums (125 tracks)
David Bowie - 10 albums (110 tracks)

(approximate numbers of tracks and albums w/ box sets counted as 1 each)

Copper & 734: What are some good essential Fela Kuti albums to check out. I've heard Zombie is good, but I'm trying to get into his music, so if you have some good recommendations I'd appreciate it.

There's a double-disc compilation called The Best Best of Fela Kuti that's really good. The only thing about it is that all the songs are edited versions (but they're mostly still pretty long. A song that was originally like 20 minutes long might be edited down to just under 10 minutes or so.)

If you know that you want to get all the albums--I really like He Miss Road/Expensive Sh*t, which has the full version of my favorite Fela track "Water No Get Enemy". Most of Fela's albums are packaged in pairs now--two original albums per one cd. Zombie is good too.
