When he died, the whole band lost an energy that hasn't been seen since.

RIP Cliff Burton. The best metal bassist who ever lived.

what's the deal? none of you faggits listen to Metallica?

Anyway here is the info on his tragic death:

During the European part of the Master of Puppets tour, the band had complained that the sleeping cubicles were unsatisfactory and uncomfortable. As a minor solution the members would draw cards for the most comfortable bunk. On the evening of September 27, 1986 Burton had won the game with an ace of spades. He was sound asleep when the band's tour bus encountered a patch of black ice, skidded off of the road, and flipped over on the grass in Ljungby Municipality, rural Sweden.

Burton fell through the window of the emergency exit door and was killed instantly when the bus landed on top of him. He was crushed a second time when, in an effort to clear the accident scene, a winch cable snapped and the vehicle was clumsily dropped back onto the body.

Controversy continues to surround the cause of the crash. The driver of the bus claims to have hit black ice, however on inspecting the road for several miles following the crash, lead singer-James Hetfield said he found nothing. Hetfield and other members of the band claim the driver may have been drinking

He was the main influence on Metallica's early sound.

Man, metallica ain't nothing more than alright. They weren't ever good enough for people to be all that upset that they're slightly worse without dude, who's been dead 20 years. Besides, this is thrash, bass players are essentially dudes who stand on stage next to the people you can actually hear.

They were great with him and without him. Jason Newstead was the man as well. But yeah, I haven't been feeling them since after the Black album. I still paid like 80 bucks to see them live though :(. Not worth all that money at all. They were great, but I'm saying. The nerve of someone to charge that much.

What are you TALKING about dude?? How can you say they were "alright" after watching the youtube link??? Anyways that's your opinion I guess.

But without CLiff Burton, Metallica wasn't just "slightly" worse. They fell the fukk off after he died. Cliff was more then just a good musician. He was the biggest influence on Metallica's first 3 albums, which are also their best 3. Dude was a legend.

I agree that the first 3 albums were masterpieces, but although a great album, And Justice was the beginning of a slow slide towards the dumps.

Cliff rocked!

Weren't you the one comparing RATM to groups like Limp Bizkit? Man, your brabbling gets worse and worse...

On the thread topic: I wouldn't say that Metallica died with Cliff. While "Master" was arguably their peak, "Justice" and "Black" were still great albums. But it was the beginning of a slow "downfall". I'm sure that stuff like "Load" and "Reload" (even "Black") would NEVER have happened with Cliff, or he would have left the band.

His bass doesn't sound like that all the time. If your talkiing about how it sounded on "For whom the bell tolls" it's because he was playing it through distortion and wah-wah on purpose. I thought it sounded great.

I've put St. Anger back in my CD player last week and have been playing that sh*t like crazy. I love that album.

Kill 'Em All, Master of Puppets, etc. all that older sh*t is classic. I remember the Guns 'n Roses / Metallica tour way back... my brother went to one of the shows i think.
