Sometimes I think I do, especially when rap is going through sh1tty ass periods like the one it's in now, but still, the best rap music>>>>best rock.

Sometimes I think I do, especially when rap is going through sh1tty ass periods like the one it's in now, but still, the best rap music>>>>best rock. I listen to rock music more. Own more rock music. Think the best rock music is better than the best hip-hop music. But I enjoy my favorite hip-hop records more than my favorite rock records.

Rock music is better than hip-hop music. Just because there is more quality in the genre.

I think alot of music is better than rap. such as gospel, jazz, reggae, rock...dancehall is on the heels of rock. i also enjoy my favorite dancehall songs more than my favorite rap songs. but i like my favorite rap albums more than my dancehall jems...

back to rock.

rock music is way more skillfull than hiphop. sometimes there's more to listen to in one rock song than a whole hiphop album...

the musicians are better. the shows are better . live drumming > rhythm boxes and beat breaks. a band > a dj. continous basslines > 808s and looped funk. we dont even need to get into the guitar work in rock....

but i still listen and like hiphop more overall ;) ..

Rock is just better. In terms of actual talent, music quality, album wise, etc...

You're listening to bad rap, there's a LOT of hot sh*t out right now. Back on topic, though... when a sample is flipped right, the beat is hot & the rhymes are on point... it's still falling short to a really good rock song. And that's just preference, though. I could see folks seeing it the other way around easily.

Both, when done right, can be brilliant, so I can't say one or the other. I'm a fan of music, period.

It's a tie for me....I never placed the emphasis of rap on just the beat, my favorite part revolves around the lyrical complexity of the words and how well they sync with the beat

whereas with rock I don't really give 2 ****s about the lyrics, I enjoy the virtuoso guitar solos more than anything

I guess I listen to rap more and overall I like it more, but NOTHING compares to a bad ass guitar riff

I'd have to agree with this. I get sick and tired of listening to hip-hop all the time, and I need to switch it up to something better. That's when alot of my rock, soul, and jazz collection comes into play.

I enjoy lot of downtempo electronic music too.

Exactly. Why does one need to necessarily be better than the other? I love Rock, but there are more than enough Hip-Hop songs from every single era that I'd place up with the classics of rock.

It's that the two can't really be compared in any meaningful way--I mean, they can be compared, but there is no fair and easy way of determining which is "better"? There have been great rock bands and there have been great rappers. Some great bands and some great rappers have made terrible records. And there have been some terrible rock bands and pitiful rappers. We can make generalizations about which we like more, but that's it. Personally, now, (though I listen to very little of either) I listen to more rap than rock, but that wasn't always the case. Blanket statements about which is "better" are meaningless.

In times like this, rock is definately kicking ass due to originality, whereas rap has become nothing but hype music where you'd be just as well off with the instumentals.

I like everything but country, and I'm trying my ass off to stick with hip hop in hopes that it makes a comeback.

Too many of you listen to some really weak rock music. So the fact that you think these artists are better than Hip Hop artists has me questioning whether you like Hip Hop at all or if you're just on these boards for the fun.

Define weak rock music. Because if you mean little whinny rock bands that complain and do the "whaa whaa" routine, that ain't me. I still love hip hop... just not feeling the mainstream of it too much lately. Most undergrounders still kick ass in my book.

i can say that hiphop is better than rock only in regards to national attention.

However when it comes to underground artists, rock has hiphop in a landslide. Indie rockers get far better deals, shows, venues, and a better overall music out of the limitations that they have. Hiphopers that are independent just sell their wack cd's outside of fatbeats and virgin megastore, because they can't convince anyone that they should be able to do a live show. man i hate those guys.

Rock >>> rap, all day every day. These days I only listen to rap basically because I feel guilty at times for completely abandoning it.

I like jazz, disco, electronic and international music as well. Rap just does not have enough musical depth to hold my interest any more.

Like who? And whats wrong with liking both? Just because I may like Rock music more than hip-hop doesnt mean anything.

You're not alone.

I'm messing with a lot more rock now than at any previous point in my life, as well as other genres, but I could never completely abandon hip-hop. I may not mess with any current sh!t too much (didn't buy a single new hip-hop album in 2006) but that's because I'm now busy discovering and rediscovering old school sh!t. On Friday I copped Gang Starr's "Daily Operation" and am loving it.

IT's too hard to say that one is better than the other, when both sem to be so creatively bankrupt at the commercial level. I mean, does every f@cking band need a concept album? Is Nas the only rapper who can make any kind of conceptual mark? Even getting down into the underground, hip-hop sucks there too, but on the flip side it's like every new band wants to be metal-core or still some variant of emo. You gotta look harder and you'll still probably listen to one more than the other but you should be able to find some really good music. Just not in country or r-n-b they suck beyond any kind of redemption at this point in history.

Yea...

I've been listening to a lot of older rock, like from the late 70s, and to me it sounds like motherfukkers just shot from the hip topic wise and just made music. Obviously now these dudes aren't all over the radio and stuff, but without the Internet and all the media, the only way you could get famous was by making good music. The late 70s/early 80s was a melting pool of new genres... people were willing to experiment and put in 110%.

These days music seems to be a lot less about content and...I forgot the word, there's this loud ass lady laughing it up like a hyena, Jesus Christ...but yea, it's all about the image of the band and their appeal. It's the same in rap. Everyone is beefing and talking wreckless but nobody is making good music. It's disheartening.

You know, dudes in the late 70's and 80's said the exact same thing about the music coming out in their time.
