I think it sort of makes sense. Kurt was probably never comfortable with the fame and attention that he and the band was getting. So, he decided to make a record that could possibly alienate the MTV fans.

That was pretty much his express purpose. He probably succeeded. In Utero, while successful, didn't sell anywhere near as much as Nevermind. And by that time Pearl Jam was hot on Nirvana's heels in terms of mainstream success. I think "Vs." pushed a mil in its first week.
