Anyone interested in doing a book club type thing over the holidays?

If ur interested, post some titles w/links to amazon or sum'n, we could go with which ever one gets the most ppl to c/s it? I realize getting it together is kind of a long shot, but figured it's worth a try??

1st nomination: Angry Black White Boy (http://www.amazon.com/Angry-Black-White-Boy-Novel/dp/1400054877/sr=8-1/qid=1166044426/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/002-3658237-8626418?ie=UTF8&s=books) by Adam Mansbach

thx for the pity posts Ladies :) Even if only 3 of us read the same book, we could have a lil discussion.... I'm sooo out of the loop w/current books & stuff--most of the titles on my wishlist are nonfiction-- but found a couple more interesting titles browsing amazon

Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs: A Low Culture Manifesto (http://www.amazon.com/Sex-Drugs-Cocoa-Puffs-Manifesto/dp/0743236017/ref=pd_sim_b_2/103-8669048-5431068) by Chuck Klosterman

New & interesting-sounding in a GenX way.

Kindred (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0807083690/ref=wl_it_dp/103-8669048-5431068?ie=UTF8&coliid=I35RB8ENOD681G&colid=2RODGVRC7U9KB) by Octavia E. Butler

I been meaning to read Butler for the longest, Cerebral Knieval said start w/Kindred.

So Fly (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0312333250/ref=wl_it_dp/103-8669048-5431068?ie=UTF8&coliid=I1E80ZIZZGYLZ1&colid=2RODGVRC7U9KB) by Giselle Zado Wasfie

ok it's fluff, but, but, but.... might be fun?

You almost done with the Bourne Identity Retta? I wouldnt mind reading a thriller.... I havent picked one up since I read Dan Brown's Angels & Demons and the Da Vinci Code...

If both of you co-sign the same book, I could go with that for sure.

OK it's settled then! w00p!

It's a classic, so it cant be that hard to get at the libary or (used) book store, I would HOPE?! Ur not that far in the boonies are you??? LoL. Amazon .com and .ca both have used copies for fairly cheap.

Re: the timeline...

How realistic is it if we say, pick up the book and read idk the first hundred pages by the end of the year? We could start discussing then. The whole thing is ~280 pages.

If you two think that's doable, I'll make a new thread w/the book title in it, see if we can get a couple more people into it...

Let's start with a deadline to get the book first. I know the holidays are coming up so should we wait until the new year?

Edit: It's in my local library so I can have it by this weekend.

yay@caramel-LADY and OTB being down!

So, can we say: get the book by the 1st week of January? or even later? What's a realistic date?

I'll probably read ahead too, but it's cool. My main issue is that school starts again mid-Jan and then I'll have too much outside reading to do to keep up. Altho, it should be okay to overlap the first few weeks.... I dont do much homework then anyway... public school habits die hard heh.

You can't read in English and I don't think the book has a Spanish translation.

don't pick on immigrants or we'll all go on strike

Okay, soooo...what was the importance/symbolism of Robinson Crusoe in this book? Aside from the parallels that Dana's experience draws on it, anyway.

I think it's because she had to help her family. Rufus was always damn near getting himself killed so she to help him because if he had died, then hagar wouldn't have been born and Dana wouldn't have been either.
I thought there might be a deeper reason why Butler made this allusion to Crusoe. I couldn't quite pinpoint the reason, being I never read Crusoe.
