Go directly to the man in my avi: Lee Scratch Perry. (My guess is that Perry is Scientist's main influence. The two worked together a little some time back.)

Lee Perry was the producer many credit with originating the roots reggae sound and dub as well for his work with his trademark band, the Upsetters.

He also worked with Marley and the Wailers leading up to their international break-through. Their work together is probably the best reggae I've ever heard. Get either Marley's Best of the Upsetter Years or African Herbsman for the best of that work.

Perry's distinctive sound probably did not develop fully until he started producing records made in his home studio, the Black Ark. The sound is rugged, bass-heavy, and psychedelic at times. It often sounds as is if it was recorded under water and the drum & bass leads the charge. To me, the best record Perry produced during this period was Heart of the Congos by the Congos. This album ranks up there with Marley's Exodus as among the best roots reggae albums ever done. Perry also produced a great album by Max Romeo during this period, War Ina Babylon. If you've heard and you like this album, you'll probably eat up much of Perry's work.

There's a ton of available, high-quality compilations:
Arkology (for mid- to late-70s "Black Ark" material)
Singles Collection (for early 70s material with the original Upsetters line-up)
Open the Gate
Build the Ark
I Am The Upsetter (4 disc collection that overlaps some of the previously mentioned collections)

Another recommendation: the great Burning Spear!

Burning Spear is really unique, so you might want to start off with his Marcus Garvey album first to see if you like it. He is as singular as any other in his songwriting and his singing has great emotional depth.

Enjoy.

Get pretty much any album from Sizzla -This guy is the best reggae artist to come out in the last ten years IMO. He's like a modern day Bob.

Also try:
