damnj, another n*gga cosign the ish

Desperate for their own identity, producers hate being compared to other creative types. But whether he likes it or not, Zukhan Bey has a lot in common with Kanye West. In addition to being a producer/rapper, the 29-year-old, who describes himself as a "dynamic, nice-ass producer," clearly indulges in heavy doses of self-love. Zukhan became enamored of his own beatmaking after purchasing his first MPC in 1999. Subsequently linking with fellow Philly native Scott Storch, Z scored one of his first major label credits in 2002, co-producing the Roots' "***** Galore" with the Tuff Jew. He's since branched out on his own, supplying many A-list artists with a diverse array of sonics. His biggest production to date, however, is Jim Jones' "We Fly High," which intros a sample of "Mr. Cool" by Rasputin's Stash before giving way to an all-original composition. With more credits in the Dipset camp forthcoming, as well as heat for Lil Wayne on deck, Zukhan is living up to his South American Indian name, which means "he who conquers."

How'd you get down with Scott Storch?

Zukhan: I met him in the studio through a friend of mine. He recognized how hot my rhymes and my writing was, so we got together on some writing. Then I was like, "I make tracks, too." So we did some tracks together. I would lay the foundation down, and then he would come throw some **** on top. No ghost producing [though]. All the **** we did, we did together.

Okay, but didn't you claim to ghostwrite a verse on Jay-Z's "*****es & Sisters" off Blueprint 2? What exactly did you write for him?

Zukhan: [Laughs] I wrote the whole second verse. I came up with the concept [for the song] and actually co-wrote it. I did "Roc Army" [off the Paid in Full soundtrack] with Cam and Jay... a lot of stuff. I did a lot of **** over there at Roc-A-Fella.

Since you're writing and producing, how do you balance the two?

Zukhan: A lot of my **** is me doing **** other than just the beat. Like, I did a joint on LL's [10] album [called "Lollipop"]. I wrote the hook on that and did the beat. I produced "***** Poppin" for Ludacris. I wrote the hook, structured the hook and the beat. I had my homeboy Lateef lay the hook on [Jim Jones' "Honey Dip"]. I came up with the concept and then had him lay the hook.

Sounds like you're a one-man music shop. Do you play any instruments?

Zukhan: I play anything that's there -- enough to get it down, 'cause you know it's about the feeling. I just go off the emotions of how I'm feeling it. I feel the chords and lay it down. So that's what it's about. A lot of people can be classically trained and play, but then if it's time to produce a track, they might can't nail it. And then it's about mixing. It's about engineering. It's about being able to do enough of everything to get it down. So I do enough to get it down on any instrument.

So how does it feel having a big single like "We Fly High" catching on?

Zukhan: I love it! I feel like I'm flying high right now.

B1tches and Sisters does sound alot like the flow/style Hov was using on Kingdom Come.

Jay's tarnishing his legacy.
