buy a little into the hype, 'new kings of hard rock' i hear, Leviathan and Blood Mountain receive solid-excellent reviews. download..and i hear the same sh1t i heard on Helmet/Pantera records 15 years ago. singers godawful, no change of pace tracks, one keeper song in 2 albums.

TV on the Radio..buy a little into the hype, lets download Cookie Mountain and the preceding EP's. i get 5 minute songs that take 3 to become audible, zero sound structure and some singer-by-committee bullsh1t that dont fly. get minor points for being a little original, but that only goes so far when your sh1t sucks

Figures you would like them, anything half decent and you hate it. I'm sorry it cant be genius like Nine Inch Nails or Marilyn Manson  .

thats the thing tho, they at one time were completely unique unto themselves. what record sounded like Downward Spiral? nothin, what sounded like Mechanical Animals? nothing, Reznor and Marilyn's schticks got old after a while but they were elite artists. these people just retread records i already heard, and they suck at it.

even the old mainstays arent on my radar, Zombie sucks now, Maynard turned into an arthouse faggit who overproduces the sh1t out of songs (i thought that was the purpose of Perfect Circle), Reznor's trash, i grew out of pretty much all of my old industrial records except Chemlab, Skinny Puppy and KMFDM's Nihil. i got nothin to turn to, ill check out the new Deftones lp out i hope its not a continuation of the same song they've been doing since White Pony

See you pretty much put it out there that you aren't really listeneing for sh!t that doesn't meet your preconceived notions. You're just like the vast majority of self proclaimed progresive types ( I know you diodn't say that, but if the shoe fits....) who act like they have such impeccable musical tates, but relly just like what they grew up with and when music isn't like that anymore then the music failed.

BTW Mechanical Animals is Manson's Bowie ripoff album it's not original in the least. It's a good album but it ain't nothing more than that.

i agree that the hype killed it for Mastodon, thats some mediocre ass sh1t to be getting these kind of reviews. always felt i have, by far, the most brutal expectations for music. its my life really, but at the same time when dope sh1t hits my ears everything else is moot. if i would have dug half of Leviathan i dont make this thread, but it was so painfully mediocre it made me angry.

the only 2 bands formed post 2000 that i check for are LCD Soundsystem and And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead. even the latter bought into their own hype and dropped Source Tags and Codes, which everyone liked but me. ive tried so many recommandations and nothing strikes me, bits and pieces of a lot of different albums but no landmark bands or albums

and yea i shouldnt have said that about MA, it was obviosly his Ziggy Stardust. but it was just so cool to me how they went from sound to sound on what to me was 3 consecutive classic albums. (not counting ISC, talking debut-Antichrist-MA), he misses Twiggy so bad. Golden Age of Grotesque was his C True Hollywood Stories

thats part of the issue too, ive never had many friends into rock. i can rely on myself for my own hiphop and electronic needs but havent had anyone to suggest some quality rock since like middle school. ill give it a try im up for anything good, it doesnt have to be groundbreaking

To the thread poster:

Go download the album "De-loused in the Comatorium" by The Mars Volta...their sound has changed a bit since that record, and imo it's their best album, but you might not like it or their new stuff.

It might take some time to get into, but, take my word for it, when you do listen, give the music your full attention to take it all in. That's when I caught it. The vocals are atypical, some can't get past 'em, but, oh well. The band is basically 2 Hispanic guys (Puerto Rican on guitar, and one half-mexican on vocals), a half-Haitian guy on drums (incredible drumming), Hispanic dude on bass, and Black dude on keys, so it might not sound like what you usually listen to.

Hell, I'll give you the album:

What the hell...I don't think really understand what is going on in Mastodon's music. First off they have one of the best drummers alive, and he alone makes them a band worth paying attention to. Two sick guitarists who complement each other well and a good bassist. The band is great technically and a lot of what goes on in the music is pretty insane. I don't know how you can say the album has no change of pace tracks when it includes songs like "Sleeping Giant", "This Mortal Soil", "Siberian Divide". and "Pendulous Skin".

Oh and I don't know why so many people in this forum think their singers suck. They're METAL singers, what are you expecting? Phil Collins? Geddy Lee? Their vocals fit the music perfectly, you really can't ask for much better.

By the way, Mastodon and Pantera really sound nothing alike.

all sounds the same to me, they could add another drummer and still sound like some Brand X sh1t. i know about Mars Volta, unique ill give them that. that album was pretty solid

I picked up Blood Mountain about two weeks ago and it was my first experience with Mastodon. At first, I didnt like it... I think i was thinking it would be super chunky so I put it down for a week. Came back to it and Im starting to like it more... I dont know if it is beacause I have a guitar playing background and what they are doing musically interests me more than how they sound (that probably doesnt make sense -- sorry). I just listened to Leviathan (album before Blood Mountain) and I like that a lot better.

It's kind of funny to me that you hate Mastodon yet like LCD Soundsystem. To me LCD are utter trash (the production and remixes by DFA are infinitely superior) But there are a ton of bands from the last couple years that are excellent. My first recomendations would be Death From Above 1979 and Blood Brothers and Minus the Bear. They all sound fairly differnt from whatever is mainstream. But really at this point in 2006, Blood Mountain is easily album of the year, give it another chance.
