Stop lying to yourself
You see them looking and you care
You care that they look at you with your beautiful boy
And that ringless finger
You care about their reaction when you say
“no, I’m not married”
You care about the look of pity that crosses their faces
And inside you cringe just a little
You feel just a twinge of embarrassment
When the doctor calls you “Mrs.”
But you don’t correct her because

You don’t want to see that look
That look like you should have known better
The look that the family gives you
When they think about all the potential that you had
Or what would your mother think if she had lived to see this
*sigh*
I love my son more than anything
And I feel so guilty for caring what others think
But it’s just that look
That damn look that chills me
The look of pity
The tone of voice that says
“Another one?”
My baby has saved my life
in ways that he will never know
He was not a mistake
He was conceived in love
Tenderness and love
He makes my day better
with just a simple smile
And a “Mama”
