ascics - prolly the all around best running shoe. you'll be surprised.
some new balance
air max 180/360- very comfortable
other nike running shoes
those are the main ones.
stay away from Nike shox though. they are comfortable at first but they damage easy and start to hurt after standing on them too long.
I dont know about adidas and reebok.
why don't you go in a store and ask an associate or manager for their opinions?

go to a running speciality store & get fitted...each person is different & things like over/under-pronation, high/low arches are really impt. in determining what running shoe would work best for you. I have a pair of mizunos now that have made such a difference in my runs.

air max 180/360- very comfortable
i got some black 360's and they are seriously the best damn running shoes i have ever encountered. better have an extra $160 lying around if you want them though.

i ran for the first time 2 days ago with air force ones...body parts I never knew I had still hurting
No need to spend that much on the Air Max 360s...just go for a decent Air Max shoe like a Air Max Moto, Pegasus, etc. Air max in the heel and zoom air in the forefront is the best combination for me.

I'll list 3 great shoes
Asics Gel Kinsei - $165 - as good as you can get and probably the best around.
Asics Gel Frantic - probably about $85, maybe cheaper, it's attractive and supportive and great option if you are on budget.
Nike Air Max - $160 - Another great shoe, great arc-support
I wouldn't get a cross trainer. If you are serious on running, get serious running shoes. I have tried all three of these shoes and think it's the best in terms of comfort. I have the gel kinsei and I am very very happy with that purchase.
Obviously there are other great running shoes, but you cannot go wrong with the above. what is your budget btw?

shouldnt he get fitted in a running specialty store....
Unless he has really rare shaped feet (extra flat, wide, narrow, etc), then why should he bother?

because you are getting fitted by professionals(Most of the time marathon runners, Don't know about you, but as a beginner I want advise from someone that knows their sh!t than some teenager trying to sell me the newest, greatest, Nikes).
We are talking about your feet here, buy something thats not right for your feet and ur assed out. You'll be sorry.
They measure both feet for you, observe the way you walk. Also, at footlocker they wont tell you that its recommended to get a size larger than you normally wear to give your toes some extra room.
Then they recommend you sneakers based on their observations. Show you proper ways to lace them. They basically school your ass.
Then you can get the same sneaker somewhere else for cheaper if you want to be grimey. I paid them for their help and knowledge. Now next time I buy my sneakers I'll buy them where there cheaper.
Don't take it from me, take it from the 1000000 running websites that are out there that tell you specifically to go out to a running shoe specialty store to get your first running shoes.

i did that ONE time.. i paid $180 dollars for the nikes that i got at this upscale specialty store, where they have the little mini-tracks you can run on to try them and special fit them and all that.. and i swear that my new balances felt just as good. i dunno maybe it's just me.

I've read that Nike's are in the lows as far as running shoes quality are concerned. I'd especially be sceptical about getting a pair of them 360s or any running shoe with an air bubble. What happens if you catch a flat? ..lol
Anyway, the place I went recommended me New Balances and I am very satisfied. i got the 857's, were $90 but the guy gave me a student discount (im not even a student) and 3 pairs of some special running socks that keep moisture out on the house.
Came out to $80.

damn $180? before I got fitted I was wearing some regular nike cross trainers & then some adidas clima cools...while neither one generally caused me pain, I would feel my feet start to ache after awhile. once I got fitted, the pair of mizunos that were recommended for me ($85) felt so good on my feet...the difference was def noticeable. it was nice to be able to talk to someone who actually understands how runner's needs differ from others...
anyways, the brands I hear mentioned the most when it comes to quality running shoes are:
mizuno
asics
new balance

The Nike Free shoes are the best running shoes ever.
I use them for everyday wear instead of running because they are so comfortable lol
