growing up on the southside of chi town
like the west it was predominately brown
we made the most out of what was less
with the hopes and prayers to transgress
for that's the way it was or so it seemed
when you're young and still able to dream
but naturally came the harsh reality
that America was not built for me
the city let my building run down
my neighborhood is like a ghost town
best homes and stores are in the suburbs
where the white folk moved to in herds
but now it seems that it was all just a bluff
they realize chi town is a diamond in the ruff
it seems that suburbia was a little overated
now unfixable homes are being renovated
but you know their not being rebuilt for us
to keep us away they charge tall in God we trust
my apartment building is now called a condo
and I don't have the dough so I have to forgo
searching for a rersidence I notice something strange
surburbia now has housing that fits my price range
cogitating my neighbor's exodus I on look with a chagrin
that once we all move out we will not be allowed back in
because the evil empire cares not whom it destroys
next they'll build a wall 'round chi like the city troy
