Does increasing weight on a machine even out using less weight for free weights? For example, would I benefit more by curling 60 pounds on a machine, or 50 pounds using dumbells?

free weights all day....gotta get those stablizer muscles right and i get better results with freeweights....
...but i do use the high pulley and the seated row pulley for tri's and my back...
Benchpress...military press...curls...should all be freeweights....

Its not even close, the advantage of free weights over machines is HUGE. Experienced lifters ought to know this, free weights usually tend to add stabilizers and core muscles into the equation when working out major muscles(even small muscles as well).
Deadlift, squats(front and back squats), overhead presses, bench press, power cleans, bent over rows. These lifts followed by correct dieting and right gym intensity will get anyone jacked up a.k.a BIG and STRONG.
however, machines do have their a place in the gym. And can also be beneficial depending on the person's(fitness/exercising) goal.

No contest. Free weights all day everyday. Well, I use machines occationally or for secondary purposes.

I guess I need to rephrase my question. Can u get equal or better results if u use more weight on a machine than u do free weights? For example...if u bench 200 w/ freeweights, do u get better results if u benched 250 using a machine?

Nope, because with free weights it forces you to use more stabilizer muscles. Even though you can actually get good results from machine weights because it's better than nothin. If you wanna get huge just eat, do compound exercises and have patience it's that easy.

Stick to free and throw in some machines for variety if you want
Dorian Yates was Mr. Olympia and he was big on using Nautilus and Hammer Strength Machines
Jay Cutler also used to be big on hammer strength machines and he uses **** squatting machines for legs
So machines do work, but they mimick free weight movements. You will have to use some machines like pulldowns unless you do pullups all day, no freeweight exercise will let you pulldown any weight

I do machines once in a while to change up the routine so my muscles dont get used to the same exercises. But definitly free weights > machines.

they have a preset range of motion to help you out as a beginner and may reduce injuries because you have more control over the weight.
Its easier to move a pin than to pull weight plates off and rack dumbells

machines to get or stay in shape. and to get more cut since stuff like bowflex works on so many muscle regions
free weights to get bigger and/or stronger. to get more of a diesel look. they have the quickest noticable gains
in my experience, free weights are more rigorous workouts

I used machines to get that confidence at lifting again, but moved over to free weights and the difference is night and day for real. Free weights is the way to go.

Free weights get you the most gains and just feel better all around after the workout is done.

To be honest, there isn't much advantage using machines except for rehabilitation, or to use at the end of a free weight workout to give you muscles a slightly different look. Other than that, machines have many disadvantages. For one, the manufactures make machines for the average person's height and limbs. So, if you aren't average, which most people are not, then perhaps you aren't going to use the ideal range of motion.
And what I love about free weights that most people do not know is it helps people strengthen their bones. It actually makes your bones more dense. And when people kick you, this is what happens to them (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-3538094578644826806) <-- not for the sensitive
