Bob Dylan says modern music is worthless (http://today.reuters.com/news/articlenews.aspx?type=entertainmentNews&storyid=2006-08-22T152139Z_01_N22476890_RTRUKOC_0_US-DYLAN.xml&src=rss&rpc=22)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Bob Dylan says modern recordings sound "atrocious," and even the songs on his new album sounded much better in the studio than on disc.

"I don't know anybody who's made a record that sounds decent in the past twenty years, really," the 65-year-old rocker said in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine.

Dylan, who released eight studio albums in that time, returns with his first recording in five years, "Modern Times," next Tuesday.

Noting the music industry's complaints that illegal downloading means people are getting their music for free, he said, "Well, why not? It ain't worth nothing anyway."

"You listen to these modern records, they're atrocious, they have sound all over them," he added. "There's no definition of nothing, no vocal, no nothing, just like ... static."

Dylan said he does his best to fight technology, but it's a losing battle.

"Even these songs probably sounded ten times better in the studio when we recorded 'em. CDs are small. There's no stature to it."

I do think "sound" is a big, big problem in rap music. I love Ghostface's Fishscale, for example, but the sound is horrible--because (I guess) the beats are made of pre-recorded material that never gets cleaned up (remastered) and then the beat itself probably doesn't get cleaned up before Ghost spits over it. On top of that, his voice don't even sound as clear as it could.

"Sound" is not a priority for popular music apparently. The audience is not demanding good sound.

A lot of current classical music and jazz sounds great. One jazz label, ECM, has always gone out of their way to make sure that their sound is on point... and it is.

Yeah--and I mean, we all know Dylan doesn't listen to hiphop, so he can't be said to even be commenting on it--I agree completely with what he's said.

There's no comparing even U2--who's supposed to be on an all-great level--with the best arists of 30 years ago. I like to get on newer stuff and keep up with what's going on, but honestly I haven't heard anything on the level of the Beatles/Stones/Velvet Underground/etc level, and I discovered those bands' whole catalogues before I was 18. It is ****ing said.

Im only 20 and already I feel old, all I listen to is 70s & 80s soul and funk, 80s and 90s hip hop and abit of dance, though I think Bob Dylans music is just as bad as the crap he's crying about, he does have a point.

He's talking about recording quality, not actually record quality.
