there's basically two categories now...you're either a consumer or a retailer. the term sneakerhead is dead & I'm someone who actually believed it had legitimacy at some point (before the hype took off). these kids are already getting out of it, selling off entire collections their parents copped for them. going out of your way to cop super limited releases solely cuz you want so badly to be unique is really lame as well...the whole concept of rocking what you like is lost to a lot of these folks.
i dig.

Sneakers leave fashion footprint
A generation later, kicks aren't just for the court

By NEDRA RHONE
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 05/20/07
It's the 25th anniversary of Air Force One.

No, not the presidential aircraft.

For legions of sneaker lovers (known as sneakerheads), Air Force Ones are classic shoes by Nike, and the anniversary confirms something they've known for years: Sneakers are here to stay.

Air Force Ones, along with other sneaker classics such as Adidas Shell Toes and Puma Slip Streams, sparked a fashion revolution in the 1980s as sneakers moved from the basketball court to the everyday wardrobe. Now firmly in the mainstream, sneakers of all sorts are making tracks in luxury stores and among female shoppers.

"Everyone wears sneakers," said DJ Greg Street of Atlanta's V-103 radio station, a serious sneakerhead who owns a custom-made pair of "DJ Greg Street" Air Force Ones.

Street recently traveled to New York and Toronto for Air Force One celebrations that featured at least a thousand different versions of the classic shoe. He even held his own sneaker-appreciation party recently in Atlanta. Old-school hip-hop blared from mile-high speakers as sneakerheads of all ages, ethnicities and income levels buzzed around shoe exhibits.

Nike introduced the Air Force One, or AF1, in 1982 on the NBA courts. The company had planned to phase out the AF1, but fans in Baltimore wouldn't hear of it. So Nike reissued the $89.95 white-on-white original and began to introduce new limited-edition versions. Teens in Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York cruised I-95 searching for sneaker stores that carried the exclusive styles.

Over the years, Nike's collaborations with everything from magazines (Vibe) to holidays (Chinese New Year) have fueled demand for AF1s. More than 1,700 versions have been released over the last 25 years; today, the price ranges from $80 to $250. While sneakerhead culture is still fairly small, the Internet has made it easier to acquire AF1s, and enthusiasm for sneakers has spread.

Even as sales of the $19 billion athletic shoe market have slowed — increasing only 2.5 percent from 2005 to 2006 — according to data from market research firm NPD, consumer preferences have changed.

"A huge part of the athletic footwear market is not comprised of hard-core users," said Marshal Cohen, chief industry analyst for NPD. "Consumers are telling us that style and comfort, not performance, are the keys here."

That's a long way from the days when Moses Malone and five other NBA players first tested AF1s on the court. The shoes went from being performance-based, said KeJuan Wilkins, media relations manager for Nike, to being a style that many people liked for purely aesthetic reasons.

"Sneakers, especially high-end ones, are becoming more acceptable," Street said. He noted that someone at a nightclub may be wearing a $50 pair of dress shoes, while the guy standing next to him is wearing a pair of $2,000 sneakers.

Who, then, is high-class?

An indie brand known as Greedy Genius recently partnered with Barney's New York to offer shoes priced from about $145 to $180. And boutique owner Jeffrey Kalinsky has a new collection of PRO-Keds — a collaboration with former hip-hop impresario Damon Dash — as part of the luxury lineup at his stores in Atlanta and New York. The shoes, based on the original PRO-Keds styles from the late '70s and mid-'80s, include options for women and cost $105 to $125. Fred Segal in Los Angeles and the top 12 Nordstrom stores in the country also carry the line.

"A really cool sneaker is a really cool guys' comfortable shoe, and he wears it wherever he goes," Kalinsky said.

But the move to court female shoppers may provide the best evidence of the sneaker's impact on fashion. In 2001, Nike introduced the Women's AF1 Low in white with pink snakeskin accents. Other styles include red satin AF1s with ribbon laces or white AF1s with pink trim, a gray swoosh and diamond accent.

"A lot more women are into sneaker culture," said Shea Zeigler, 19, of Atlanta. She became a sneakerhead two years ago, after spotting a pair of Nike SB (that's Skate Board, to you novices) Dunks. The shoes were colorful and meshed well with Zeigler's self-described Punky Brewster approach to style.

Vanessa and Angela Simmons, the nieces of urban fashion guru Russell Simmons, also have responded to female sneaker wearers with a new line of shoes called Pastry. The duo's launch of its Cake Collection, chronicled on the MTV series "Run's House," features sneakers in shades of pink, red and brown with names like Strawberry Shortcake and Red Velvet.

"We wanted to do a sneaker line by females for females," Vanessa Simmons said during the first release party for the $65 shoes in Atlanta.

Shoes named after sugar-coated treats may be considered sneaker-lite in the male-oriented world of sneakerheads. But even die-hard sneaker enthusiasts are starting to rank novelty above nostalgia.

At Laced Up on Edgewood Avenue, owner Ernel Dawkins says the time had come for an update.

His store, once a grittier spot with graffiti on the walls, recently got a Bloomingdale's-style overhaul. Dawkins thought a cleaner look would serve as a better backdrop for $300 shoes.

"I love to experiment," said Dawkins, who stocks alternative brands such as Dekline, along with various women's styles to accommodate the increase in female shoppers. With sneakers, "if the designs are crazy and people start sweating it, then it takes off," he said.

And it would seem that almost anything goes these days in the world of sneakers.

"There is no formula, no scientific deduction," said Bradley Carbone, associate editor of Complex magazine, which recently published a sneaker edition. "That is why sneakers are so great. You can have a personal response to something like this. If you like it, go for it."

Sneakerheads would have it no other way.

The concept of the Blazer involves a missing person ad on a carton utilizing the same color scheme as a milk carton there.

offthabooks maybe you could tell me: when in the hell did these retros come out - I didn't know about this until last night, and I've been all over this website before these popped up outta nowhere:
http://www.rareairshoes.com/Running/Running%20Pages/Air_Tech_Challenge_Retro.htm
all it says is " retro release at the beginning of the millennium" when the hell was this?? I'd pay a grip for those, those look pretty close to the original but I'm not sure if there even was a low like those are, I always thought those were 3/4's only. Either way those are fly to me. There's always someone on Ebay every couple of weeks selling that version (original of course) but all used lookin like stink and some dumbass will always end up payin like 150+ for em.
