I'm thinking about adding some protein powder to my diet...wondering what the specific benefits are. I am always having to make an effort to make sure I take in enough protein, so I was figuring this would help. Some specific questions I have...

1) I read somewhere your body cannot digest more than a few grams of protein at once. Does this that if you take in a shake w/40 grams of protein, the majority of that protein is lost?
2) When is the best time to drink a protein shake...morning, afternoon, after your workout?
3) What effects does it have on your body's muscle development?

Protein(s) are the building blocks of our organism(muscles and etc), so it has a very positive effect on your body/muscle development when taken by the right amounts. By rule of thumb, we should take in 1g of protein per 1lb of body weight(BW) a day. For the folks that are looking to increase muscle mass or bulk up, they should shoot for 1.2+g of protein per 1lb of BW.

answering your questions:
1) In general your body can only digest in between 20-40gs of protein per meal.

2)In general, before and after your work out.

for the hardcore lifter(wanting to gain alot of muscle mass): right after waking up, before and after your workout(whey protein), and before going to bed(casein portein). And also sometimes after some meals or as meals(casein protein). That way you make sure that your body never goes into a catabolic state(no msucle growth), you want to make sure your body is always in an anabolic state(muscle growth).

3) Protein supplementation has a positive effect on muscle development, of course. Your muscle need protein to grow further. However its important to know what portions to take.

One more thing supplements are meant to only supplement/enhance your overall diet and nothing more. So I would advise to rely more on getting your protein from whole foods like lean beef, chicken breast, fish, tuna, peanut butter, low fat milk and etc.

ps:
Whey protein=body digests whey protein very fast, so its ideal for before and after workout.

Casein Protein=body digests casein protein slowly so its ideal for after waking up and before bed. also good to take it as a meal.

I heard too much of that powder protien will fukk up your kidneys. I take about 40g of it to supplement my diet a day...but I also drink about a gallon of water a day as well.

I don't know what it would do for girls, you have to figure out a goal. Protien supplements are basically for gaining mass.

not really, some people have gastric distress from certain ones..especially if they arent used to it(many proteins have digestive enzymes to combat this), some peeps are lactose intollerant and even if the amounts are small it affects some. Most protein, 99.9% has no effect on me, but Lean mass matrix by prolab used to send me running.

Most proteins have little to no fiber,some meal replacements have them( prolab's lean mass meal, vpx's ,icellean)..just read the labels and check your wallet

from my experience, maybe its just the one particular brand I use, but it takes away that post workout and morning after stiffness/pain...i feel like i havent been in a gym at all, and i spend like 2-3 hours there

also has digestive enzymes soyour stomach wont get upset

It does nothing, protein is a myth. I've tried protine and glutamine, I still dont look like I want to.
