What to the slave is the fourth of July
but jumbled lies
shattered cries
and separated lives
awaiting to be deprived
who am I ?
A former slave who learned to read and write
mimicking words my slaveholders recite
memorizing biblical verses
I grasped cursive
only to become a wordsmith
with unlimited verbage
a rebel among insurgents
your declaration of independence
poses no relevance
when slaves are quite capable of human intelligence
but oppression reaps malevolent
amongst melanin skin
Sundays off days to forgive thy masters innocence
punished and beaten for opposing resemblance
ignore my eloquence
this July you celebrate American Independence
but you remain color blind and unaccepting
to the obvious conception
or is your constitution
just a blemish
with an ambiguous message
if all men are equal
why do you oppress and degrade my people
rejoice your liberty
but yet you instill
misery restrain literacy
enslaved for centuries
with a rejected identity
so this holiday expresses a mockery
which means nothing if it commemorates hypocrisy
