i remember him vaguely
now that i think about it
we'd be playing baseball
right next to his two flat
on the corner we'd stop
to let his car pass as he drove
to his garage we knew a treat
was in store he'd always have
a tin can full of candy in his trunk
we'd pick out a piece while saying
yes to his always asking if we'd
been good that day we never knew
his name nor did he know ours
we just called him candy man
he was the only white person
that lived on our block and
he drove a purple Buick he was
bald at the top always had a
smile on his face at that time in
our lives color was irrelevant
we were young and innocent
then one day the car stopped
coming and we thought hey
where's candy man yeah
where is he, man i bet he
moved off the block yeah he did
it was just a matter of time we all thought
so we continued playing baseball
i mean after all the game must go on
