I'm looking to make a mix cd, I'm just trying to gauge everyone's favorite joints from back in the day, I'm hoping to come across some jewels in this thread that I may not have heard, or maybe stumble across a song I never knew a name to, thus leading me to never be able to track it down...

Old School Hip Hop has been officially defined as Rap music before 1986. Most of the stuff you listed is eithe Golden Era or Throwback.

Anyway, here is a list to get you started;

1. The Message - Grandmaster Flash and the FUrious 5
2. Planet Rock - Africa Bambaattaa and the SOul Sonic FOrce
3. King of Rock - RUn DMC
4. Superrappin - Grandmaster Flash and the Furious 5 (if you got Audacity or Sound Forge, edit the first 4:20 out. The first 4 minutes or so is an old school routine, the rest of the song is ill posse/freestyle rhymes)
5. 8 Million STories - Kurtis Blow feat Run DMC
6. Rappin and ROckin the House - Funky 4 + 1 more
7. Together FOrever - Run DMC
8. New Rap Language - Spoonie Gee feat Treacherous 3
9. Its Yours - TLA Rock
10 Request Line - Rockmaster SCott and the DYnamic 3
11. Marley Scratch - MArley Marl
12. Bad Boys - Bad Boys feat Kay Love
13. Freestyle Live - Roxanne SHante
14. Gucci Time - SChooly D
15. PSK - SChooly D
16. Rockin It - Fearless 4
17. Buffalo Gals - Malcolm McCaren and the WOrlds Famous Supreme Team
18. We Are Known as MCs - The Crash Crew
19. New York, New York - Gransmaster Flash and the FUrious 5 feat Melle Mel
20. Megamix part 2 - Grandmixer DST

22. Friends - Whodini
23. Fresh is the WOrd - Mantronix
24. Put that Record Back on - Just Ice
25. Rappers DElight - Sugarhill Gang

Just so you know, rap from 79-81 is more funk oriented with funk bands playing the background music. From 82 onwards, rap producers started using electronic drum machines and synthesizers, thats also around the time you started hearing scratching in records. I have listed a lil of both. The later stuff (82-86 called "The Mid School") is a lil harder. The earlier stuff from 79-81 is a lil more happier, party/feelgood music.

I consider "Old Skool" per se to be pre-Sucka MCs (1983) so here goes:
01) Afrika Bambaataa: Lookin' For The Perfect Beat
02) Afrika Bambaataa: Planet Rock
03) Kurtis Blow: The Breaks
04) Flash & Melle Mel: White Lines
05) Keith LeBlanc & Malcolm X: No Sellout (How could you forget???!!!!!!!???)

There's a 2CD comp. called "Big Apple Rappin'" which has a lot of overlooked singles on it, put out by UK's Soul Jazz. You need to get that if you're into this stuff at all; it's unreal. Such great stuff (and such awful **** as well, like a reggae cover of "Rapper's Delight") and good quality liner notes, too.

I deem anything before the mid-nineties as Old School. Beats and Rhymes were still in existence. This is just too hard for me. yo, my man, when the mix is done, let me know so I can cop it or play it on my website. I am just glad to know that you are still mixing the realness. For that matter, big up to real DJs. You all are becoming exstinct as well.
