The thing that puzzles me when you watch shows like the World Strongest Men is that most of them hardly have a bodybuilder's physique and virtually all of them are Scandinavian.

On the same topic, how would someone like Schwarzenegger in his prime fare on bench press, squat, deadlift ,etc and how does that compare to the guys competing in the WSM?

what puzzles you? they train to maximize power, and most of them will tell you that they do not care for a beach body or bodybuilders physique. They probably eat 7000 to 10000 calories per day, where a bodybuilder might do that once in a while, then go on a cutting phase.

They are a different breed of lifter. They focus mainly on lifting for strength while bodybuilders obviously look for mass building routines. And like Shoalin said, their metabolisms are way higher than the average lifters; some of them have a RMR of 7,000 cals a day! All these people do is lift, lift, lift, and then lift some more. Some of them do have the genetic build of a bodybuilder like Mariusz Pudzianowski (3-time World's Strongest Man), while others simply lack the genetic make-up of a bodybuilder.

You have to remember that one key factor in becoming a bodybuilder is simply genetics. Some have the build and frame that is ideal for bodybuilding, while others do not. This group that lacks in the build and frame section, may possess above-average strength though. Many of these people become solely strength competitors.

People are under the misconception that when you lift you create NEW muscle fibers. This is a huge misunderstanding. The reality is that you were born with a certain number of fibers, and you will go to the grave with the same number of fibers. Lifting simply enlarges and stretches these fibers; this is why many will never have the frame or build for the makings of a bodybuilder.
