i refuse to cook because we have a community kitchen in our dorm & it's beyond nasty. we have a chow hall that's decent, it has everything from pizza & hamburgers to deli meat & vegetables

you must be in the military huh
Just keep it simple...
-Eat six times a day
-Look for calorie-dense foods (peanut butter, milk, cheese, etc.)
-Stock up on Beef Jerky (overlooked mass gaining snack)
-Make sure your foods consist of mainly protein, some carbs, and some fat (think of a 40/40/20 split).
-Take a Multivitamin (Try Universal Animal Pak, they make the best mass gaining multi, just be ready to handle the 22 pills you gotta take every morning).
-You said they have hamburgers right? ask for it without the bun and make SURE they are grilling the burgers. Soak up any excess grease or fat with a paper towel.
-I must stress the Peanut Butter here. If you have access to it, buy Smuckers Natural Peanut Butter. Its loaded with healthy fats, good amount of protein, and about 220 calories in only 2 tablespoons. I used to run through a jar a day when I was bulking for football.
-Load up on Oats/Oatmeal (if available) for breakfast, with a lot of milk, and the occasional fruit or yogurt. Try to stick with the original Quaker Oats since its not hooked-up with Sugar.
Holla at me if you need specifics and good luck.
Oh... and as for training, since your gonna be bulking, go to failure on each set. In other words don't rely on a set amount of reps, just keep repping it out with moderate weight until you can't no more. This kicks your muscles in to Hypertrophy (muscle growth) which how you actually gain lean muscle. Stick to core lifts too (Bench, Squat, Cleans, Deadlifts) and build your programs aroung those lifts. Also, try your best to avoid machines during this Hypertrophy phase.

Thanks for this information - I never knew about beef jerky! Anyhow, what would you recommend for a female trying to gain weight (but not trying to get all buff and muscular)?

Well females aren't going to need too many calories. To be honest I'm not too knowledgable when it comes to female bodybuilding (well for gaining weight atleast). Pretty much follow the same guidelines, but don't consume TOO many calories. Female lifters I know pretty much follow the same rules that male lifters do.
Lemme do some research and get back to you on this.

I'm not a bodybuilder, and I don't lift weights, I'm just trying to gain weight...
