Man!! My shin splint is crazy and as long as I've been sprinting and coaching I've NEVER found a really good way to deal with it. Now I have a few kids on the team complaining daily about shin splint.

Anybody have any good ideas besides icing em or icyhot & a heating pad??

Tell me about it. I've had it for about 6 years and yes, they take away from alot. I'm running track for my school (about to), and i'm dreading that sh*t. Proper shoes with proper cushioning will help. Icing is usually what I do almost after every run now. Icy hot sometimes. Try to get them to run on softer surface majority of the tim (maybe grass or sand, which is the best). I got to run today and I'm already making plans on how to keep my shins from just giving out on me. They take away from a persons overall performance also because they're usually in pain while they're performing.

They got some exercises I do too, putting a weighted plate against a wall and putting my toes under the other side of the plate and raising my toes to work out my shins. But i still got mines and it sukks. I'm like yuo, never found a really good way to get rid of them, which is why I stopped running for a minute and doing the ellipticle (sp?) machine with full force to work on speed.

I've always had good track spikes, Ijust bought sum new ones that are so fresh :)! I 1st got it running cross country in HS and that was up and down dirt and rocky hills so u kno it was a wrap for my shins. The track were on now is a dirt track and that plays a big part in the injuries so were gonna be using a new track at a near by college and that will be great. I kno a few exercises but I'm looking for something to make then feel better now that I have it already.
So if anybody knows anything let me know.

btw, what events do you run?

Not sure yet, I'm just about to try out for it now because I need to improve my 40. I only want to do something with short distances though, long distance running damn near numbs my shins.

I got mines in HS when I was running and playing basketball. I stopped running because of them.

40?? u play football or something? football players always talkin bout the 40 or the 60....yall so cute. The shortest distance in a regualr track meet is 100m..then 200m..then 400m..and so on...
So get ready to work ;) People that run the 100m are super fast as well. The speed workout will put alot of pressure on ur shins as well.

I run the 100m, 200m, 4x100 relay and the pressure on my shins is killer, even just walking around they bother me.

Then I'd probably do 100...

yea, 40 is just fine for me. Thats all I want. ALot of football players run track in the offseason to stay in shape and now I have the opportuinity to (plus, I need to get in better shape and increase my 40).

I can run short distances fine, it's just those long, cardio runs that get me.

work the anterior tibialis opposing muscle to the calf... use an ankle isolater to do this or a dumbell placed in between both arches of your feet while sitting upright on a bench w/ both legs straightforward on bench.... lift the dumbell using your ankle... also do calf work too.... alot of it is do to a weakness in the ankle and the hammering of your joints and shin against the surface is creating inflammation.... do this three times a week taper your running but don't stop... add a day or two of bicycle sprints instead of sprints everyday... trust me it helps.... play basketball and stay in peak conditioning by utilizing a track, im out of shape now due to tendinitis that won't ****in go away

also there are two stretches that are perfect and work wonders for shing splits.... one is the so called calf stretch against a wall where it looks like your lunging w/ one leg forward and the back leg is straight, this is not really a calf stretch your stretching the anterior tibialis on the back leg... the other stretch which works the same muscle is where you kneel on the ground w/ leg and the opposite leg is bent up w/ your body leanign into it... one leg bent w/ knee on the ground, other leg bent w/ knee up and foot flat.... the knee thats up, pull it close to your body as much as possible you will feel a stretch.... do these after every work out and then ice
