View Full Version : Who is responsible for more quality music over the last 50 years, Blacks or Whites???
We all know that all popular music in America can trace its roots to black blues musicians. But who has produced more honest, classic, and heartfelt music over the last fifty years, blacks or whites?
IMO the majority of popular black music today is garbage. Of course, so is most of the popular white music. But of all the popular music today, white rock bands seem to me to be the most authentic.
But over the last 50 years, who's the best?
And I'm not taling about Americans only. I'm talking American music. Include The Beatles (the greatest band of all time), The Stones, etc...
Marvin, Miles, Dylan, Hendrix, Lennon, etc...

Are you black?
Have you ever truly explored those other types of music?

I just asked the question.

I just asked the question.
Why do you assume?
after i read what the thread was about it was just a matter of doing the math.a better poll wouldve been who made the most quality hip hop over the last twenty years, blacks or whites. i highly doubt its too many people here whos over fifty and would know about music from that era, so how could we truly answer the question? maybe a few off brand nyggas and wiggas who collect records from back then to sample from could tell you. but for the most part thats a loaded question and you know it. so why would you have to come out and say whites make the best music when you already said whites make the best music? you not clever okay

20% of thousands is still a substantial amount. i have mad old school rock joints by bugged out groups with all kinds of bugged samples on 'em.

When did I say whites make the best music?
All I said was that The Beatles are the best musical act.
Its simple...do you prefer Motown or Rock and roll...Punk or Hiphop...R&B to alternative rock..Disco or Funk..
Its preference...and if you on this site this is an easy question

I didn't ask who invented it. As a matter of fact, I said in my post that we all know that Blacks invented the majority of American music.
But saying that they produced the best material because they are the ones that started it is just as stupid as Mos Def saying he doesn't like the Rolling Stones because they "stoled the art form" when he himself is performing a kind of music that he didn't invent.
What, The Rolling Stones didn't produce great material? Better than Little Richard and Chuck Berry? Get the fukk outta here.
And don't forget about Country, Folk, Alternative, Punk, etc... Whites made a lot of good shyt also.
The Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Joni Mitchell, Nirvana, The Sex Pistols, Johnny Cash. Come on now!!!

You beleive the beatles, bob dylan, and the stones are musical gods... and you know what they are... but at the same time, me personally I think Bob Marley eclipses the beatles and bob dylan combined as far as it goes and yeah it probably has something to do with the fact that my family is from jamaica and thats what i grew up on... but see the difference between me and you is i can stand back and say that the music i grew up on as a child is going to influence what i think is great music... you on the otherhand cant do that and simply think the artists you personally likes are intrinisically better than everything else

Indeed.
I personally don't like anything besides Hip Hop because the adults in my house never played music and the first thing I remember hearing is Run DMC "30 Days" on the radio. Pink Floyd would put me right the fvck to sleep.
If the white music had more soul, then why isn't there a genre called "Soul"... oh wait, there is...

5 Grand answered your question perfectly. This IS a loaded question. You have your mind made up already and only asked the question so that you'll have a platform to inform us. It doesn't matter really, because I can see your point. My musical idols are Bob Marley, John Lennon and Prince, so arguably, 33% of what I FEEL is "white oriented". I know there may not be many on this site who likes (or in my case Stannish) of John Lennon but there's nothing wrong with it. Music is objective and there is no right or wrong answer, if there was, 5 Grand gave you the answer.

Not only is it a loaded question and subjective...it also depends on what kind of music you listen to alot. Someone who likes Classic Rock is probably going to fall to the "white" side (why it all cant be good music I dunno but whateva) because of people like The Doors, The Who, Pink Floyd. Where as someone like myself who enjoys funk and motown a little bit more would probably say that blacks have put out better music in 50 years.

here it goes blacks create real music from there experiences in some shack down south like Robert Johnson with an old slide guitar and their foot and then White's copy the original in a big fancy studio with all kinds of engineers to make it sound sonically superior so yes whites produced good records and black create better music from the soul...
Now that doesn't mean all white ppl music suck but if you listen to
"Like A Rolling Stone" written and perform by Bob Dylan and compare his version next to Rolling Stones version and Jimi Hendrix version Jimi kills all of em.
And as far as the so-called greatest band The Beatles
sure as far as pop music is concean but I favor
(Parliment/Funkadelic or Sabbath/Zepplin anyday)
but that's me. But if u asked those guys themselves how they compare to the groups they copied and popularized amongst white folk they along with the Stones,Clapton and so on say Howling Wolf, Muddy Waters ect....

Everyone builds off the past and tries to make it better. Whites do it to blacks, blacks do it to whites.
Jimi was a huge Dylan fan, that's why he recorded so many Dylan tracks, including "All Along the Watchtower," which Dylan himself admitted was better than his original version.
And "A Change is Gonna Come" by Sam Cooke, arguably the greatest soul song of all time, was written because he became obsessed with Dylan's "Blowing in the Wind," and the fact that a white man had written the best protest song up to that point.
Then Dylan paid Cooke praise by performing "A Change is Gonna Come" at the Apollo theatre.
Keith Richards admitted that he got a lot of his original licks from the old Robert Johnson recordings.
It all goes around. Some people just have the gift, and they learned from previous generations.
If I came off like I was saying "whites are the best" that was not my intention.
Right now, my top 10 artists of all time are as follows:
1. The Beatles (Lennon/ McCartney are the best song writers of all time IMO)
2. OutKast (The Beatles of the Rap Game)
3. Bob Dylan (An almost endless catalog of greatness)
4. Marvin Gaye (No need to explain)
5. Ottis Redding (One of the greatest voices of all time)
6. Biggie (His two album career is nearly perfect IMO)
7. The Rolling Stones (Some of the best rock songs ever)
8. Bob Marley (Best protest songs ever written. Up there with Dylan for his lyrics and Lennon/ McCartney for his melodies.
9. Miles Davis (The last trumpet solo on "Flamenco Sketches" contains my favorite sequence in all of music.
10. Oasis (They just sound a lot like The Beatles and have great melodies.)
Beck, U2, Stevie Wonder, etc... could crack the list on any given day.
So there you go, 6 out of my top 10 artists are black.
I don't know why ya'll assumed I meant white?

Black People started rock n roll, hip-hop, jazz, blues, soul, r&b, country music (yes, black people started this), and funk. What other genre's are popular nowadays? I can't thin kof any, so I'd say black people are responsible for all the quality music of today because they started all the genres that people still fukk wit today

biggie isnt a top 10 in his own genre...hows he gonna be top 10 of all time?
The rolling stones are the most overated GROUP of all time and the same goes for dylan. bob dylan is one of the most overated artists in musical history, i could easily name 50 better song writers than him.
Get Oasis off your list immediately....they simply duplicated a sound, they are like a cover band and definately not top 10 worthy. And the Band that they impose, the beatles, are also slightly overated. Not as bad as the others tho. The Beatles were great because they revolutionized rock n roll, they created a new sound that withstood the test of time....for that i give them credit....but their fanbase and record sales far exceed their musical talent. Altho Lennon had his moments
and please....never, EVER, incorporate u2 or bono in any top 10 list. even if its an honorable mention.....take it back. U2 stinks
But here is a serious question, how do you put outkast, biggie, oasis, and otis redding over:

Kurt Cobain
Jim Morrison
Chuck Berry
Burt Backarach
Elvis Costello
Willie Nelson
Elton John

You're jaded. Country music was NOT invented by white people. That's absurd. It comes from old negro spirtuals, the blues and traditional Folk music. Folk music is rooted in Bluegrass. The banjo is major part of Folk music, which is a W. African import. Punk music is clearly derived from Funk. "Alternative" isn't even a serious genre. Techno originated in Detroit and was of course pioneered by black Americans.
Lets say this is a serious comparison, you still couldn't be serious. White Americans left their song and dance in Europe. If you think whites have put out more "honest, classic, and heartfelt" music than blacks, you deserve no opinion. Even if you round it up to the last 50 years, you're essentially saying the white acts you took a liking to put out more "honest, classic, and heartfelt" music than even Motown in their prime. Get it together.

Yeah,3 black dudes from Detroit created "techno" but obviously they were influnced by some European music.A cool flash movie about Techno if anyone wants to see it :smoker:

Beck, U2, Stevie Wonder, etc... could crack the list on any given day.
So there you go, 6 out of my top 10 artists are black.
I don't know why ya'll assumed I meant white?
I whole heartedly agree with #1, except for the fact that without John Lennon, there would be no Paul McCartney as we know him. Lennon was MCH BETTER. (On another note, I believe Smokey Robinson was the greatest song writer of that generation).
BTW, I refuse to vote.

Interview with one of the creators.Talks about blacks not feeling techno music http://www.techno.de/mixmag/interviews/DerrickMay1.html
Yeah,3 black dudes from Detroit created "techno" but obviously they were influnced by some European music.A cool flash movie about Techno if anyone wants to see it :smoker:
http://www2.abc.net.au/arts/soundsliketechno/swf/default.asp#Scene_1
Did they say they were influenced by European music?
Country music is like a combination of White American Celtic/Folk music with Black American blues.Country music is mostly made by White Americans though.
Country Music is NOT "mostly made by white americans". The primary non-African influence on early American music is Irish and Scottish. Beyond that, outside influence is miniscule. Attributing a genre rooted in negro hymns and traditonal blues rifts to "mostly whites" is absurd.

rolling stones bob dylan and the beatles are some of the greatest, but theyre only good copies compared to their sources
you have outkast as the 2nd of all time?? are you fukking high? i mean i know its all opinion....but thats just stupid crazy.....although, so is the rest of your warped list
news flash homey
biggie isnt a top 10 in his own genre...hows he gonna be top 10 of all time?
Billy Joel (the greatest song writer of all time)
Kurt Cobain
Jim Morrison
Chuck Berry
Burt Backarach
Elvis Costello
Willie Nelson
Elton John
James Taylor
Tom Petty
Jimi Hendrix
Freddy Mercury
Cat Stevens
Steve Harris
2pac
Roger Waters
Neil Young
Eric Clapton
Eminem
Nas
Peter Townshend
Paul Simon
Jimmy Page
Robert Plant
Steve Tyler
Thom Yorke
Axel Rose
James Brown
Buddy Holly
Harry Chapin
i could keep going but you get the point....just explain yourself
and dont give me the "hey pal its just my opinion"
How the fukk is andre from outkast better than billy joel?
Well, it is opinion.
Me, myself, and I personally like every single OutKast song I've heard, and I think Andre3000 is the most talented artist in the history of rap. Biggie is the best emcee overall, IMO.
Billy Joel said he wouldn't even be writing music if it wasn't for The Beatles, and you can hear it in his music. He has some alright songs, but he's a Lennon/ McCartney/ Elton sound-a-like.
And you would honestly put Buddy Holly above The Rolling Stones, get the fukk outta here. You think they're the biggest band in the history of rock by accident?
And the thing is, I like most of the people you listed, specifically James Brown, Paul Simon, Jimmy Page, etc...
Pete Townshend = mad overrated (plus he likes kiddie porn)
Step your music game up, kid.

And oh yeah, you honestly think you can name 50 better song writers than Bob Dylan? Do it.
There is a reason why Bob Dylan has more of his songs recorded by other artists than anyone, ever.
so you're a fan of the stones but don't even know that brown sugar, one of their biggest hits, was about raping slaves?
Have you ever heard of political parody?
I mean, do you honestly think that The Stones are so stupid as to put blatently racist lyrics in a song and release it as a single. That just doesn't make sense.
They got their name from a Black artist.
Mick was married to a Nicaraguan woman.
so you haven't even heard the song but you know it's a parody? impressive
