Summer of 1990: New York City

The headlines erupted, not from any mundane criminals
But a killer, shooting Thursdays at twenty-one day intervals
Mike Ciravolo, the lead detective was on the case with
A Zodiac-based novel written 1986 by Robert Graysmith
These strange tips would reveal what to see in this sadist
But the police weren’t the only one’s reading its pages…

Ciravolo would lead C.A.S.C. squads to days end
(Crimes Against Senior Citizens) his men arrived at 7 a.m.
To find Joseph Proce, shot dead by a homemade zip gun
The night shift handed Ciravolo a note that lay by the victim:

This is the Zodiac.
The First Sign is dead.
The Zodiac will Kill the twelve signs in the
Belt when the Zodiacal light is seen?
The Zodiac will spread fear
I have seen a lot of police in Jamaica Ave and Elden Lane but you are no good and will not get the Zodiac.
Orion is the one that can stop Zodiac and the Seven Sister
No more games pigs
Shoot in Brooklyn with .380 RNL or 9mm
No grooves on bullet

Proce was shot between Brooklyn & Queens, with pure precision
Like San Francisco, the departments struggled over jurisdiction
Raising suspicion on individuals, though police knew more
Than to assume anything during a crack war in East New York
Then on June 19, Post reporters received a taunting message
On it a mention of shootings that had gone undetected
March 8, Mario Orosco was shot, a Columbian immigrant
Forty-nine years old, gunned down at Atlantic and Sheridan
A man in a bandana followed him, he was dressed in black
Orosco turned to run but collapsed as the bullet hit his back
March 29, Jermaine Montenesdro was shot lying sideways
The thirty-four year old drunk, passed out on his driveway
Zodiac claimed a May 31st shooting during the darkness
An old man shot at twice walking near a park bench
All survived, yet Zodiac’s first three attacks were critical
Occurring while stars Orion, Taurus, & Pleiades were visible
A sick individual, the sky being maps for his crime scenes
These star clusters were seen again, June 21, 1990.

Orion’s Belt

By days end, authorities set up a city-wide dragnet
Thinking the Zodiac would attack, not simply lie stagnant
Later that hot summer day, the Zodiac’s gun blazed
Traveling from 59th Street to Central Park via the subway
A homeless man, Larry Parham, became the hunters catch
Hours after Gemini turned to Cancer, shot in the upper chest
Authorities would later stumble upon a remarkable find
Three rocks on top of a note covered in astrological signs
Constellations marked on a city map provided help
The exact locations of the shootings recreated Orion’s Belt
Detective Borrelli, who worked the David Berkowitz case
Joined the investigation when a note surfaced the next day:

This is the Zodiac. I have seen the Post and you say
The note Sent to the Post not similar to any of
The San Francisco Zodiac letteryou are
Wrong the hand writing looked different it is
One of the same Zodiac one Zodiac
In San Francisco killed a man in the park with a
gun and killed a woman with a knife and killed
a man in the taxi cab with a gun

The detectives later dug a bullet out of the park bench
And cyanoacrylate fuming showed it had a dark print
With this evidence, detectives planned to pick up their man
Then Zodiac vanished for 2 years, becoming myth once again.

August, 1992: Zodiac Returns

Five victims shot in succession, police had no leads tracked
Before receiving a note that read, ‘THIS IS THE ZODIAC’
Posted on the back, a new encrypted cipher with signals
That was solved placing a mirror at the side of the symbols
Mirror image naval flags used to produce a new alphabet
Police grew passionate; they immediately knew half of it
Proof of a slip, the Zodiac attacked according to signs
Yet the reported five were random, and not according to time
August 10, thirty-nine year old Patricia Fonti would die
Shot by a .22 caliber zip gun, stabbed over a hundred times
This brutal crime, in fact, was not the last of its nature
Mentally handicapped Joseph Diacone, hacked with a razor
Just days later, as Zodiac startled cops and shook them
Police found pipe bombs under a parking lot in Brooklyn
People thought, would he just stop? Or end it by dying sick
An opinion made by Michael Welner, a forensic psychiatrist:

“There is this sense of being a hunter. He is trying to create intrigue with codes. He wants to be glamorous because he’s a loser…there is an element of sadism about him. I think he’s very interested in getting attention…it’s very cowardly.”

Four years passed with more shootings, lurid attacks too
But this was after all, New York City, the murder capital
But on June 18, 1996, after the investigation had ran dire
A 911 call, shots fired by a man known as ‘The Vampire’.

The Shootout

“Female shot in the back, Pitkin Avenue.” A dispatcher said
Leading paramedics to 2730 Pitkin, in his path of lead
The medics quickly fled from the shots heard by their heads
To a man on the third floor, the element of surprise was dead
Bullets ricocheted off sidewalks, chunks of brick explode
From the ammo the gunner let go in his upper window
Kids across the street stopped to hide, the cops arrived
To cordon off a nine-block area, returning shots while blind
Four hours fly by, with shrapnel pinning the cops down
Each shot chipping masonry, holding the city on lockdown
Sergeant Joseph Herbert negotiated from the street below
The shooters fatigue would show more than he could know
“I think I’ll surrender!” the suspect yelled hoping he’d survive
The police lowered him a bucket; he filled it up three times
With homemade guns and knives, and clips of ammunition
The siege ended at 4 p.m., the suspect arrested in his kitchen
Then partitioned from his home, he didn’t try to demand
Legal counsel for his rights, the man kept his Bible in hand.

A Confession

Because Eddie Seda, age thirty-four, was trapped in custody
Police seized homemade pipe bombs from his lap of luxury
Facts are tough to beat; evidence by the ton delivered
Another fact, the woman he shot in the back was his sister
On the floor lay newspaper clippings of recent shootings
And articles on the elusive Zodiac were a decent clue
Seda admitted shooting his sister in a written confession
At the end was the Zodiac symbol, scribbled with sevens
“The symbols matched the letters that had been collected
six years earlier.” Noted detectives on closer inspection
“Remember that bench, where they found the fingerprint
on the bullet? Forensics proved it matched Seda’s perfect”
Police closed the case, but an obvious side note told
The ‘69 murders came when Seda was five years old
He couldn’t be San Francisco’s killer, in fact he wasn’t
Just evasive, he didn’t follow Zodiac’s tracks for nothing
Seda admitted being an ‘admirer’, it started 1986
After reading a book on Zodiac by Robert Graysmith
The novel would make public the many ascertained letters
Giving Seda the chance to duplicate his deranged mentor
He wasn’t as clever; he just did it to, “Increase the fear”
A jury of his peers then sentenced him to eighty-three years*
Judge Hanophy declared Attica is where he’d pass away

While a third Zodiac left a severed head in a plastic bag.

* An additional 152 years was later added onto the sentence.

That was good to read, interesting story and I had already read the first one. Wonder what happened to the Frisco dude, you must've read that Graysmith book I guess. Anyway, I like how you set it up like the last one and didn't sacrarfice the story for a flow or a rhye during it. Anyway, really good shyt.
