I was just about to post this. They had excellent marketing and a good album. I figured they'd be huge. Bloc Party did well, but they shoulda done numbers like this too.

120,000k thats's the UK right? Over here there's been number 2-3 albums that sold more.

I don't know what they'll sell. I mean Bloc Party is "populsr" but only amongst certain crowds and i have yet to hear anyone mention the Arctic Monkey's. But I guess it was supposed to come out yesterday. I don't know if I'll cop it though, the way it's been hyped by the UK press it can't be that good.

120,000 in ONE DAY. That's crazy dude. They got 6 more days. Not saying American artists have pushed 800,000+ the first week, but it's crazy that this new group might come out of nowhere and do it.

N'Sync moved 2.1 mill. in one week. I believe both Em and 50 have done well over 1 mill. in a week. And as far as out of nowhere? The ampunt of press tehy've gotten is staggering, that's like saying Kanye came from out of nowhere or 50.

Just got it today, fantastic album

Was really looking forward to it after i got a load of demo tracks and live recordings, they're very local to me so I'm used to the sound, our local scene was like this many years ago now but it's good to see someone like this do so well.

This album is very VERY catchy

Is there any bands they could be favorably compared to? Just for my own reference.

Quite a few but none off the top of my head, stopped listening to rock a while ago so no idea who is out. I'm speaking about local bands, most won't have a deal or anything.

i'd say theye in the same genre as bloc party+ franz ferdinand. they kinda reminded me of a british version of the strokes, but ive only given the album 2 spins so far

i just heard about them a few weeks ago but the album is pretty good on the first few listens

hmmmm......
Bloc Party favorable
Franz Ferdidnand slightly less so
The Strokes.........not favorable in the least, if it's like the Strokes I'll be better off stabbing my eardrums with spoons.

The American population is roughly 4.5 times thes size of the UK.

So do 120,000 x 4.5 and you have a more realistic figure. And remember that this is in one day.

Then remember that this is a debut from a band, its rock music, and they were nobody 6 months ago. Kanye West was a somebody for a lot LOT longer before these guys.

Then its a little more impressive.

I'm sorry but most of y'all UK heads sound like pussies when you defend your little Brit bands. 120,000 is decent for sure but it's gonna seem like a lot more with your limited populatin. One day ssales in the end are bullsh!t. It could mean there were only that amount of people waiting to cop and then it falls off. See what the one week sales are, then what they are in three weeks then get impressed.

theyre expected to sell over 350k this week.
for the UK, thats HUGE numbers. UK platinum plaques are awarded for 200,000 in album sales. for a band who was an obscurity this past summer to put out two back to back #1 singles and a number one album certified 1.5+ platinum in a week is a big f*cking deal.
and they deserve it. the arctic monkeys are a great band who put out a great album.

This hasn't even dropped in the US right? I'm still fukcing pissed they left Choo Choo off the record.

Those lame fukcs at Pitchfork tried ****ting on this record for no reason.

we don't get it until late feb.

and f*ck those douchebags at p-fork. they only time the give high ratings to albums is when it's some high-art obscure artist like animal collective cyhsy or vashti bunyan. but a quality rock band who taps a nerve in the mainstream and becomes a full-blown sensation in their home country gets zero love from them. i especially love the fact that even though they rated the album highly, the review was just a non-stop rant about the low points of teh album.

Late registration was their #2 album of the year...far from artsy or obscure.
Blueprint is there #2 album of the decade thus far...ditto.
They gave the arctic monkeys a 7.4 (hardly a "sh1tted on" score).
Relax.

Like dude said though, they managed to give it a decent enough score (had Arctic Monkeys not been getting hype they would have rated higher) but the guy focused on nothing but the shortcomings. The review doesn't match up with the rating. What part of the game is that?

The game of online indie mags. They're all the exact same, in that they scoff at what is good for the sole purpose of not homogonizing themselves with what is "cool" (which ironically enough does just that). I'm rather surprised your offended/shocked/(insert synonym that won't offend you) by how the fork operates at this point.

hip-hop is usually very overhyped on p-fork. they treat the clipse like the second coming. they rated camron's purpe haze the #8 album of 2005, even though it was released in 2004.
at times it feels like they just review/hype hip-hop so that they don't seem so close minded in their tastes.

my problem with the review (apart from the 7.4 rating, which is their obnoxious way of saying that its below 3/4 stars) is that it didn't mention ANYTHING positive about the album.

pitchfork's a great way to find new music and be forewarned of trash, but it has to be take with a grain of salt.

alot of bands they love are complete garbage, the reviews are waaayyy overwritten, and their end of th eyear rankings for 2005 were rediculous

Never heard of these mutha****as outside of SOHH. Still haven't heard a single track. But if they are like Bloc Party, they are prolly similar to The Killers no?

Then I may like them. I'm not a Bloc Party fan though.

They aren't really all that similar to Bloc Party besides the fact that they're brits.

Hard to pick at the moment really, but Still Take You Home, Riot Van, Mardy Bum and From The Ritz To The Rubble are up there. The last makes me laugh because of the starting lines about the bouncers.

lol Bloc Party>Killers. The American bands have really been a let down in recent years. Killers, White Stripes, Fall Out Boy and the rest of the pack are all overrated.

How can you say american bands are overrated? If you're British you get a ticked to the hype machine free of charge.

I'm american but I just havn't really been impressed with any american bands in awhile. The same goes for rap in general. It's like we are constantly being given the same recylced **** by new faces every year. What happened to the days of bands sounding differen't from each other? The labels are putting out whatever is hot for the quick profit and then move on. I liked the newest Green Day album. They have been around forever though, we need some new blood.
