My old football coach/gym teacher always told us..for every week you dont work out it takes two weeks to get back what you lost...any truth to this at all?

I would say thats pretty much the norm/average. however, sometimes it also depends on the individual, the diet(eating habits) that the individual was on while not working out. Also, some peoples genetic makeup allows them to get back on they routine faster than others.

how about when you havent lifted in a couple weeks and go to bench or something and can do more then you last did ?

thats because when you work out on your muscles your actually tearing them to make them grow back bigger...so when you take time off from working out you give your muscles time to heal and you can get the full use out of them
