Who's album is better? I know im late on the Bloc Party album but I'm still ahead of most Americans in hearing it. With that said I have to go with Silent Alarm. The album is one of the few albums ive heard in years that has blew me away. Everything from the drumming and even the singers voice stood out.
the arctic monkeys record is one of the best albums i've heard in years.
it's a good batch of really catchy songs.
there's too much pretense w/ the bloc party album. they look like they're trying too hard to fit an image.

That Arctic Monkeys joint is REALLY fukking dope, but it's not on Silent Alarm's level just yet. They're both the only two albums I'm really listening to lately.
Daaaamn, this is tough. Bloc Party has a lot of stuff going on in the songs beyond what you hear at first. While Arctic Monkeys have a catchiness that no other band right now is touching. If I had to choose though I'd go with Bloc Party.
Also I am super pissed the Arctic Monkeys left Choo Choo off the album.
I didn't even know Arctic Monkeys was out, saw the advance a week ago.
It's weird that thinking about people all over the place listening to them, they're very local to my location so they way they speak is pretty much like most people speak around here.
EDIT: 23/01/2006 is the album release.

Is the Arctic Monkeys hype bigger than that of Bloc Party, Maximo Park, Art Brut, etc.?

No idea who any of those other bands are.
I just like AM because they're quite local and have a sharp sence of humor.

Art Brut had barely any hype over here from what i remember, certainly not from mainstream outlets.
Maximo park had a fair bit of hype, singles charted quite highly etc.
Bloc Party obviously had loads of hype.
Arctic Monkeys probably have at least as much as bloc party, certainly more than the others. I'd put money on their album debuting at number 1.

Meh. Bloc Party is cool and all, but that album doesnt have much replay value. That Artic Monkeys album is pretty damm good, but I could see it fitting in the same category as Bloc Partys. I've heard more then a few people say that it's gonna be the album of 2006 (Artic Monkeys), which is think is a little more then ridiculous.

The Arctic Monkeys sh1t is very dope, but we're one month deep and it's not the type of amazing where it seems unfathomable for someone else to top it in the next 11 months.
can someone upload the artic monkeys album, i cant get a torrent going

Arctic Monkeys have much more hype than any of the bands mentioned, inlcuding Bloc Party. Arctic Monkeys have everyone 'jumping on the bandwagon' as such, in that they're first single went to number 1, even The Sun Newspaper won't stop talking about them.
As DC said, they're local to our area in the UK (like 20 mins away), they're quite working class so everyone likes them rather than just the indie people which Bloc Party get.
Very catchy, but I could see it becoming a bit boring, cos they're isn't much variation.

I think I voted for Bloc Party kind of early. When I voted for Bloc Party I had been listening to their album for weeks and I had the Arctic Monkeys album for a few days. But damn, their album gets better with every listen. I'm currently really obsessed with it. I really can't call it at all.

Thats because they all sound the same and you can't tell which was your favourite last time
Nah just kidding, I just don't think it measures up to the Bloc Party album in anyway.

Art Brut stinks in my opinion, what a trashy album. Arctic Monkeys have released a good album, but that Bloc Party **** is a classic. But I am really feeling the The Ordinary Boys right now.
You are all guilty of hyping this block party album up far too much.
Music by numbers

Come on dude. This isn't music by numbers. Music by numbers would be like the fukcing Bravery.

As much as I like the Artic Monkeys, its under the exact same line as that.

Nah the drumming alone takes Bloc Party out of the music by numbers box.

Yeah, it is. It is very formulaic music, I like it and all, but  at thinking its anything overly special.

What makes Bloc Party music by numbers and what makes Artic Monkeys exempt from that label?
this just in...
the UK really likes them: http://workorduty.blogspot.com/2006/01/everyone-loves-arctic-monkeys.html

10/10 in NME. what an amazing shock!
that score is more indicative of the NME's awfulness than the quality of the album.

Haha yes.
Hype is annoying, especially when its this widespread. Other people who influence the masses (newspapers, Q magazine etc) will be scared to give this album anything other than glowing reviews, so it will just go on and on.
It's decent music, but people are getting carried away.

Bloc Party= gash
Arctic Monkeys= tolerable

BP album sounded to clean for me, nothing daring. You knew what to expect bar after bar really. It's good, but it's just lacks the sloppyness AM have.

re-up please
my only gripe with the arctic monkeys album is the slaughtering of "riot van". the demo version is incomparably better than the album verison.

I downloaded the artic monkeys album a couple of weeks ago and love it, I've been listening to it everyday, but I think Silent Alarm still takes this one

Now that the arctic monkeys album has been out awhile now does everyone first opinions still stand or have they changed?

I still have to give Bloc Party the edge over Arctic Monkeys. I'd also put The Kooks ahead of them.

absolutely. the bloc party album is good, but its not that memorable in my opinion. there's a few tracks on silent alarm that aren't up to par (price of gas, blue light, luno, she's hearing voices[original version on the EP is much better]). that arctic monkeys album can be played front to back, on repeat, and still sound good. even though they fall into the post-punk sound, they put a different twist on the genre by incorporating the every-man social commentary of mike skinner/the streets.

I am not understanding how you could fault the Bloc Party for being forgettable then go on to sing the praises of Arctic Monkeys. Their album listens like one long song. I guess you could chalk that up to thematic consistency.
What is so memorable about the Arctic Monkeys? They put out an incredibly catchy rock album. The only difference that I notice between The Strokes and Arctic Monkeys as far as commentary is that the Monkeys spell it out for you. In my opinion they leave very little open for interpretation. I can understand how that would be appealing with more and more bands thinking abstract/obscure = good.
I'm not sure exactly what sort of innovation the Monkeys could be credited with.

their innovation is summed up to about zero. but innovation doesn't always make for the best music.

But that's what's good about it, every so often a straight forward album is needed. They delivered, it's great. Although had this been a London band, I might not have liked them as much, but because they're local there's certain things that really won't translate in other areas (just little things)
Had another listen to the SA album. One main thing that annoys me, is the lead singer. Just sounds like a bloke that'd annoy me in normal life, whiney. But has nothing behind his voice.

Why people hating on his voice so much. Like the guy from Arctic Monekys or the majority of rock "singers" anyway. At least the Bloc Party guy has a original sound that no one else has. I thought it was weird at first but now I realize it fits perfect for the band. They also currently have the best drummer ive heard!
Why people hating on his voice so much.
Because it sounds shiit.

his voice isnt bad, i dont see how you could criticize it but like the singer from AM.
and the drumming isnt anything special for Bloc Party either, the f*ck is with people being so impressed by that?

Who has special drumming?
I mean there are drummers that can do a bunch of impressive shiit but that's all it will be; impressive shiit. The drumming in Bloc Party is impressive without having to be showy.

I just don't like whiney sounding voices, it's not that I particually like the singer from AM he just sounds like a normal person rather than a man panda.

not the drummer from Bloc Party, thats for sure. its not like hes bad by any means, but dont give me any of this "best drummer i've ever heard" bullsh*t.

both these albums really sum up late teenage life exteremely well.
AM is basically a soundtrack of my college life, but it has more to do with partying and is very straightforward (which i actuall found refreshing)
but i still dont think it's toutching silent alarm. imo musically it's superior, and their lyrics hold much more than AM.

Different genre alltogether, but Stanton Moore is the best drummer I've heard in ages.
