There's periods of time that I just can't goto the gym (health stuff) sooooo I'm gonna atleast stretch more at home when I can't go...I'm normally hella flexible but right now Im so tight its ridiculous...

My resolutions usually flop pretty quickly, but I'm so serious this time!! You can tell b/c this is my first post in the fitness forum heh.

Pls keep in mind that I am basically a lazy puffed out hippie vegetarian, so I take baby steps toward this whole "active lifestyle" thing.

These are my 2006 goals:

- cut waaaaaay back on drinking til I do the Master Cleanse again in March; this should save me money, time, calories and pain during the fast as I detox

- quit cig smoking, period (I'm only an occassional ashtray mouth)

- get back into yoga (starting w/a class 1x/week and then stretching at home)

- do some regular cardio (running? I HATE running! but love the results...)

- overcome my fear of the gym (I'm intimidated by the whole culture)

and then...

- get my first bikini wax so I can show off the toight new bod at the beach properly hehehe

You can do it also, anyone ca do it. Its all a matter of determination, will/focus and consistency. It shouldn't take you more than 45mins to an hour out of 24 hours, 5 days, 4 days or 3 days a week. :) And of course, watch what you eat.

Nice to see "some" of the ladies of the forum taking action regarding their physiques and general health. That is a plus in any mans book.

funny thing is i once had a boyfriend who told me if i lost weight he would leave me. i lost 25lbs. our relationship was over after that. it was chunkies for teh win

thanks for the encouragement 'sis!

I hate it when I am good on something for a year or more (exercising regularly, or not drinking coffee or whatever) and then all of a sudden the motivation is just GONE. Its not fair LOL

wow@getting dropped for losing weight, classic...

You back in the gym yet?

I went to my first yoga class yesterday (signed up for a month's worth) and my body feels so energized today! Soon I hope to check-in on the gym thread....

Tricky thing is alcohol... I've already had 3 drinks and 2 cigs this year :( Guess I could start another thread about that...

You'll be defeating the purpose of your fitness goals if you continue in that path of drinking and smoking(its only January 5th today). Alcohol tends to dehydrate the body and continuous/consistent heavy drinking inhibits protein synthesis which leads to the prevention of muscle building/growth(ruins muscle health really). And muscle growth helps burn fat. So it would be a good idea to keep alcohol consumption at a minimum. For example try and drink just once a week. If you're a heavy drinker, start by drinking just twice a week and then graduate to once week. And when you do drink, don't over do it.

You should really try and quit smoking though. Nicotine is extremly unhealthy to your lungs (you already know this) and defeats the purpose of working out.

The road ahead of you will be tough, but you can do it. You need determination/focus, will power and consistency. Good luck!!! :)

thx khalid!! I know it's bad news, but it's also good to hear how bad, from a work-out perspective; didnt know that stuff about alcohol inhibiting muscle growth...

On the positive side, I dont smoke or drink at home anymore (6 days and counting heh) the flip to that is that I am a very social person, and when my friends & I socialize, we tend to drink and smoke.... Not to mention eat.... :guilty:

I'm staying home tonight, to avoid temptation *sigh*

How often you go to the gym? What exercises/machines do you do? Do you change and shower there or skip the group nudity and head home sweaty? Not tryna be funny, just tryna see what's the protocol for going to the gym.... I'm so intimidated

Don't feel intimidated, think about it this way everybody in the gym is still learning as well. So theres no need to feel intimidated by gym folks. No one is going to bite you.

However, before you go to the gym to workout, try and have a workout routine planned and structured. You don't want to be in the gym and not know what to workout out. You can also ask the trainers at the gym to show how the machines work and whatnot and ask them for tips about working out, routines and etc. As a matter of fact, theres a thread up top in the Fitness forum titles "Fitness related website(links)". It has links on fitness/exercising/nutrition sites. check it out.

i go at least 4 days/week. i go to on one campus (Duke) cause its close to everything i need.

i usually do the elliptical. i have the get bored easily personality so sometimes i'll elliptical for 25 minutes and treadmill or stepper for 20-25 minutes. havent gotten into weights again yet but im gearing towards that soon.

i usually work out first thing in AM or during lunch. so i shower at the gym. i keep a bag in the car with workout clothes and errything i need to shower there.

i dont mind the nudity thing, cause i havent seen a female there yet whose caught my eye, LOL. but seriously erryone pretty much minds their own business and its never a problem. im usually so wrapped up in my own thoughts and getting out of there that i ignore the other ladies in the locker room.

going in the evenings after 5PM means the gym is soo busy u have to wait for a machine and i dont like that so going earlier is wayyyy better for me.

trust sis most likely them other women dont give a damn how u look. ive gone to the gym and seen 300+ lb women walking around nude as well as chick who couldnt weigh 80lbs soaking wet (theres ALOT of anoxeric/bulimic chicks working themselves skinny and unhealthy looking at Duke's gyms, its damn near disgusting, thats another thread). 99% of the time im not even thinking about them

i say go and do ya thang shawty and dont even worry about those other hoes

thanks ya'll, good info! 'Preciate the insider info and the encouragement!

I'm planning on hitting the campus gym too, so no trainers I dont think, but maybe once I get more comfortable I can step into a 'real' gym. A.m. workouts are not happening for me yet, but it sounds like a great idea lol

I think I can, I think I can..... *lurks outside of gym with face pressed against glass*

BTW I figured out I drank approximately 3,000+ calories of alcohol over the week of New Years!! that's insane. I'm changing that!

hey elle!

good luck on those health resolutions...to give you an idea of the gym thing...here's what I do

I usually go at night...around 8pm...by that time the after work crowd has cleared out & it's not too crowded...my gym is also 24 hours, so sometimes I'll go after my work shift ends (around 2am)...I change in the locker room (just turn my back when I'm changing my shirt)...like intelis said, nobody else will really be looking at you...everyone mainly just does their own thing...I lock my stuff up in my locker & shower there afterwards (always wear flip flops)...

my routine is basically this:

hour and a half of cardio 4 times a week...I do either the: treadmill (running), treadmill (high incline walking), rolling stairmaster, recumbent bike (bike that you sit down on with your legs out in front of you), rower, swimming. I try to do cardio with as much resistance as possible (to help build muscle). I break the diff exercises up into 40 min/30 min/20 min so I get a variation each time I go.The eliiptical is craaaazy popular, I just prefer the other stuff over it tho. There's a "free room" in the gym where I do floor work for my abs/lower body. I also do yoga/pilates (thru classes at the gym) at least twice a week. And lots of stretching...when I wake up, before I go to bed, before & after working out.

My gym is coed but I have my ipod with me at all times so nobody talks to me, lol...that's prolly the hardest thing to get over...feeling like everyone is looking at YOU...but after a couple times, you'll start to feel comfortable & just be able to focus on your workout.

I stopped drinking alcohol about 3 years ago...I think it does make a world of difference.

Once you start to incorporate working out into your life, it becomes like second nature...you don't have to force yourself to go workout...you do it b/c you honestly feel good afterwards. I'm a big believer that anyone who ONLY works out for physical appearance sake will not stick with it...b/c sometimes it take awhile to see results (but trust...you will)...if you go with the intention of overall better health, believe me you will feel much better & the physical results will follow.

oh yea...tell me about the Master Cleanse...I'm curious =)

the master cleanse is woah.

the one i took you mixed with water, juice, etc. it tasted and smelled bad by itself so i made sure to mix well. got it from wellspring/whole foods organic grocery store.

MASTER CLEANSE is an understatement. the one i took should be called ULTIMATE CLEANSE, cause some interesting things came out of me. ive chatted on another board with folks who did one and they think the cleanses gets the "worms" out of your intestines :gag: .needless to say i wouldnt look at it would just go and flush but could "fell" some unholy things leaving my body :gag:

and you do feel lighter and i think id lost about 5-10lbs of waste :guilty:
here are threads about master cleanse from the other board. they are excellant resources:

flip-flops, good tip! and iPod too... alright alright... enough talk from me... time to move into the realm of action.... but not too quickly lol (I got yoga today anyway)

I'm going to scope out the gym at lunch today to find out the hours, where the locker room is, and where the door is (!!) [the athletic complex is mad confusing to me lol] -- I think if I go Friday after work, I'd be doing good in terms of starting the weekend right and doing something other than having an after-work drink, or five :guilty:

I'll hit up carmeleyes' thread w/what I know on the Master Cleanse; 'Sis I wanna see those links but feel kinda wrong about signing on to nappturality.com heh

My health related goal is to lose weight and tone my body. I started going to the gym two weeks ago today (3x last week 1 hour per session and 4 x this week 1 hr per session-primarily 80 %cardio & 20% weight training) and I've been doing well and very pleased to say that I've been noticing results already. I want to work my way up to 5x a week 1.5 hrs per session but I'm getting my fitness level up first. I don't want to do too much too fast. My eating habits are good but my major issue has been physical activity. I've been hesitant to go to the gym because it seems intimidating but after signing up and going I wish I went sooner. It's actually very motivating to go and everyone at my gym is so friendly.

I know alot of people use this term("toned") but its incorrect in this context(fitness/exercising). The correct term is "lose body fat" and gain muscle. Since muscle growth induces fat loss.

Its impossible for muscles to be "toned" because at rest your muscles are continuously in a state of partial contraction in order to be ready for any action/activity.

What are the food groups included on your diet? how many times do you have cheat foods(pizza, burgers, fried foods, basically high fat foods)?

Some females need to be careful not to overdo the cardio and stuff. 5 times a week is the border unless your'e an athlete...

My goals this year are to gain my 30 lbs of muscle, hopefully get my bench to over 360, get my deadlift over 405+ again, and hopefully get my hammy's stronger and squating 600+.

Also to get my cleans to a more respectful level for myself (275 since i just started doing them) and increase my arm strength/size and muscle endurance (I used to could do 100 pushups straight, now I can't get past 75, probably even 50, without stopping.)

It depends. Somedays, I might do 1 set trying to do as many as I can (the last time was close to 75). Some days I break them up like you do. I might do 5 different types of pushups 25x's, or I might do 50 in one way, 40 in another, 30 in another, 25 in the first way, 25, in the second, and 25 in the third. Something like that. I usually don't do them everyday in the fear of overtraining, but I might start back doing them regularly...

Hi! Thank you! So far I'm doing really good. I find the fitness forum really helpful and motivating. My motivation right now is very high. I'm on week 4 and I've been going to the gym 3 x per week(1hr per session mainly cardio). I'm going to begin adding more weight training because I've been mainly focusin on cardio. I'm going to up my sessions to 5 days a week (3 days cardio and 2 days weight training) beginning today(this week).

Hi! Thank you for the info!

I'm eating vegetables, fruits, good carbs(whole wheat, bran) and protiens(mainly salmon and chicken). I allow myself one small serving of cheat food once a week but I don't go to fast food restaurants(ex. McDonalds, burger king, etc); I cut that out completely. Mainly snacks like a small piece a chocolate, some honey roasted peanuts, ceaser salad w/the ceaser dressing or some chips. I don't really crave junk food so it hasn't been very challenging to eat right. Like this past week, I didn't have any cheat food because I didn't have a desire for it.

Sounds like your diet is consistent and pretty good. You should keep that up. In relation to fitness/exercising goals(whatever it is), dieting is the most important factor of the equation(diet, exercising, and rest). Good luck on your fitness goals!

You been eating correctly, right? Alot of people try to skip meals and say they lost x amount of pounds doing some type of cardio, not realising that they're losing more muscle than fat. Eat correctly, cut down on saturated fats and burn off carbs/calories, then you'll be fine.

And I suggest you add a light weightlifting routine. Nothing seriously heavy. Muscle burns more calories than fat, but it weighs more with less mass than fat. So lets say you lose 10 lbs of fat but gain 10lbs of muscle. You'll still weigh the same without looking the same.

like i said earlier i dont do resolutions. i started before the week before christmas and been going since then

ive beem eating correctly. im doing weight watchers which i like cause i eat everything i like but in moderation of course. it works for me for that very reason. WW teaches you to control your portions.

i HATE HATE HATE microwave meals (what can i say im a country gurl) so i cook alot anyway. so ive started cooking the same things different ways. instead of frying chicken i broil it. it has flavor but without all that grease. same for fish. i stopped eating beef a minute ago so i make all kinds of things with turkey. turkey chili (which my friends claim is the BOMB so i make it alot)...ill post the recipie in the other thread

i feel you on the weights. i havent taken the time to get a routine but i will very soon.

As a rule of thumb your daily water intake should be 1 gallon (of water) a day.

Yes and no. Even if your goal is to lose body fat you still need to keep drinking water. Your blood stream system requires oxygen(O) to work, that oxygen comes from the water you drink+air that we breath. And remember that about 60%(or more) of the human body is composed of water so its imperative that you keep a constant supply of water into your body. more water means more efficient blood circulation and that increases the chances of gaining muscle. And muscle gain often means body fat loss.

Hence the gallon of water that you drink a day doesn't just go as water weight in your body, a good portion of it is absorbed by the blood stream system.

low water consupmtion affects overall blood circulation hence preventing muscle growth. Your blood stream system needs to be healthy and working smoothly in order for muscles to grow(for most cases).

SOHH, how'd you do this year?

These are my 2006 goals:
- cut waaaaaay back on drinking til I do the Master Cleanse again in March
- quit cig smoking, period (I'm only an occassional ashtray mouth)

I only made major progress on not drinking & smoking late in the year (October). Better late than never. Pushed the cleanse into Spring 2007.

- get back into yoga (starting w/a class 1x/week and then stretching at home)

yes on stretching; wasnt consistent with yoga. Try again.

- do some regular cardio (running? I HATE running! but love the results...)
- overcome my fear of the gym (I'm intimidated by the whole culture)
and then...

SUCCESS ON BOTH! Went from eliptical workouts to running, still getting in shape but I dig it (as long as my knees hold up). The gym is no problem now, gosh what a dork I was about it. If a team of naked, 6' tall, corn-fed vollyball chicks from Nebraska couldnt intimidate me in the locker room, no one can :)

This forum & this thread in particular really helped me on this, THANK YOU!!

- get my first bikini wax so I can show off the toight new bod at the beach properly hehehe

I forgot about that one heh... still time......

Overall, feel good about where I got on my fitness goals. I lost some weight, which is always cool w/me, and made significant steps toward long-term good health.

How'd you do in '06?
