I don't eat much sweets but I want to completly do away with candy and cakes. So, basically, what can I eat instead of sweets?

Thats just more sugar. Fruits on any type of weight/fat loss diet is detrimental; its all fructose (with the exception of berries).

You have to kinda ween yourself off sugar and sweet foods. Do it gradually; every day consume less and less sugar-based foods. Eventually your body realizes it doesn't need sugar (and it doesn't) and resisting the temptation is easier.

Refined carbs like sugar serve no purpose other than providing an immediate Insulin spike, which for most americans is one of the leading causes of the disgusting obesity rates that these "victims" subject themselves to.

Focus on curbing your appetite for carbs in general by consuming fibrous and complex carbs which actually eliminate the desire for sugar. Also eat more meals, but in smaller portions throughout the day to help suppress feelings of hunger (also keeps your metabolism stable). Aim for 4-6 meals a day consisting of protein, good carbs, and essential fatty acids.

What kind of stuff do you like Isis and when do you eat it (work/home etc)? What do you think is your biggest weakness in terms of sweets? Do you crave sweet when you are full or just when you are hungry?

I'm not a dietician, but I think cutting back and subing what you like for healthier options is better than denying yourself outright. Then maybe you will eventually lose the craving for the worst bad stuff you like. That's my goal at least :)

This may sound slightly off the wall, but have you tried copping sweets from the health food store? They're not necessarily HEALTHY per se, but health food products in general are less sweet and MUCH less processed. They got good stuff too, like Newman's Own sandwich cookies, things like that. Health food products do cost more than the regular brands but that could also be a deterrent to eating em all quickly?

Dried and fresh fruits work for me (esp dry, I like the chewy texture) but I guess you tried that already... I know it's still sugar, but unrefined > refined sugar IMHO. I'm not into the chemical alternatives, for the most part.

They say changing your diet is like one of the hardest things you can do right? But it can be done! Best of luck!

How Can I Control a Raging Sweet Tooth?

69. Once in a while, have a lean, mean salad for lunch or dinner, and save the meal's calories for a full dessert.

70. Are you the kind of person who does better if you make up your mind to do without sweets and just not have them around? Or are you going to do better if you have a limited amount of sweets every day? One RD reported that most of her clients pick the latter and find they can avoid bingeing after a few days.

71. If your family thinks they need a very sweet treat every night, try to strike a balance between offering healthy choices but allowing them some "free will." Compromise with low-fat ice cream and fruit, or sometimes just fruit with a dollop of whipped cream.

72. Try 2 weeks without sweets. It's amazing how your cravings vanish.

73. Eat more fruit. A person who gets enough fruit in his diet doesn't have a raging sweet tooth.

74. Eat your sweets, just eat them smart! Carve out about 150 calories per day for your favorite sweet. That amounts to about an ounce of chocolate, half a modest slice of cake, or 1/2 cup of regular ice cream.

75. Try these smart little sweets: sugar-free hot cocoa, frozen red grapes, fudgsicles, sugar-free gum, Nutri-Grain chocolate fudge twists, Tootsie Rolls, and hard candy.

In addition to subsituting sweets with wiser food choices, drinking lots of water is also very helpful. If I'm craving something I just drink 2-3 cups of water to feel full. I also try to keep myself occupied so I'm not even thinking about the food.

also if you do eat a sweet, eat a very small amout and chew it VERY SLOWLY so it will help satisfy your taste buds. Then drink alot of water...

Or eat honey based products and lowfat/lowcarb cookies or something. I have a sugar cookie addiction so I know how it feels.
