i read this book and i liked it.
the video oprah did for it was poop though. :(

I wasn't thrilled about her making a movie either...

I read the book a few years ago. It remind me of like a "stella got her groove back" story with the older women-young guy couple w/ everyone puttin' in their two cents about how they see the relationship.
I also found it a very hard read w/ it's deep southern dialect from the 1930's. It reminds me of reading one of Toni Cade Barbara's novel's or Toni Morrison b/c their novel are generally rich in poetic-language/ different dialect.
I did like how Janie followed her heart and was sooo passioniate, but even more I liked how tight Janie and Phoeby were and the fact that Janie was a strong black women b/c it was probably hard to be strong in those days.

I am a man, but I want to answer this ...
I read it in High school and found it okay. Not that into it. then I read excerpts of it in college, and I understood it even less than I did in high school. The dialect is pretty tough. It hurts to read.
Funny how most people consider her works ethnography. That way the atypical dialect and characters make sense.
