What's f*cked up is hearing stories that Herc is broke, is or was working for Fed-ex To me he made this he should be living lovely somehow.....maybe from a movie deal or residuals from every hiphop artist..... 2 cents per artist.

KOOL HERC and Coke La Rock are a direct link to the jamaican forefathers of this culture via soundsystems and toasting mc's.

a link which goes back to the west african griots who shouted and chanted phrases over drums in west africa.

when have Kool Herc ever recorded a proper studio album? why has no one offered him a deal? even an independent record label?

that's wat i've always thought, why isn't he involved in the Music Business, whether it be his own Label or putting out Mixtapes or even a Radio Show

when have Kool Herc ever recorded a proper studio album? why has no one offered him a deal? even an independent record label?

Well because quite frankly, what Kool Herc did in his prime cannot be really captured in the form of a "song" or "album"..he basically was a party rocking d.j, minus the theatrics of cutting and scratching pioneers such as Grandmaster Flash , D.S.T or Theordore.

Also he didn't make beats i.e (produce) nor did his vocal partner Coke La Roc did what was considered rapping, Kool Herc stated in an NPR interview that what Coke did was distinct from rapping, it was basically "toasting" or what we call in america "emceeing" which is like chanting catchy phrases over beats, this is the african inspired "call and response" technique that eventually gave birth to rapping.

Kool Herc's contribution to the culture is basically providing an escape for many disenfranchised youth in the bronx, who were not able to afford nor be allowed to entertain themselves at the discos which populated NYC during the disco craze which was present during Kool Herc's prime (73-79), his neighborhood parties provided an outlet for many proto-disco type records as well as obscure funk and r&b jams i.e (give it up turn it loose, apache) that his audience was not hearing on mainstream radio at the time.

Also keep in mind when Kool Herc was nearly fatally stabbed during one house jam, he took a long hiatus from the industry and wasn't heard or seen from till the movie producers behind Beat Street sought him out.

To sum it up the "KOOL HERC EXPERIENCE" cannot be defined by a record deal or a radio show, it is something that had to be experienced live from what i'm getting, fortunatly everytime someone samples an obscure track, or when someone hosts a party and plays breakbeats they are paying homage to the man.

case in point, for future refrence, here is a list of records likely to be heard at a KOOL HERC jam:

1. I'll Bake Me a Man - Barbara Acklin (Brunswick, 1973)
