We used to be one
I held you under your sheets, our naked bodies pressed close
Even in the darkness of the night
I could look deeply into your eyes
We laughed and cried and loved the whole time
And my mind took comfort in you being mine
All the lunches and dinners and nights watching Conan
The excitement and anticipation before we started boning
But what we had transcended the physical
I miss most holding you close
Through the night as we spoke of our deepest fears and dreams
The sincerity and passion came from places within us
That we have no access to or control of...
When our road forked we could only see
Glimpses of each other through the trees
And somehow we refused to see the wildfires burning our forest
Our once fertile garden of love became a wasteland
That couldn't be repaired
Until finally all the trees were razed by fear and I was forced to stare
When I saw you for the first time in months
You were a different girl
Who's heart had snuck away from the castles in the sky we had built
Faced with reality now I realize
The course we took runs with the direction of time
And I'm back out in the wilderness, alone
But stronger and smarter, and blessed with the jewels you've given me
That I'll cherish forever.
Perhaps our paths will cross again in the future
But as it is, we are not who we were and back to square one
