He's never mentioned as one of the great producers but he is so influential and has produced so many classic beats. He put out all the juice crew artists and was major force in the careers of may of the greatest mcs, like Rakim, LL, kane, g-rap, etc. he has so many classics under his belt, I think he desrves top 5 consideration, at least top ten. what ya'll think?

Sometimes I wonder the same thing.....then realize really how bad KRS got him. So bad that people seem to forget the joints that he produced.

Even Premier and Pete Rock honor this man...Marley is the G.O.A.T.

yeah but he was doing his thing after that too, he basically saved LL's career by producing mama said knock you out, he even was doing it in the 90's with Lords of the underground, and producing LALA for cnn
and word to daconqueror I agree

No no thats not what im saying...he was doing his thing and has a great body of work for a producer but that battle really was that serious. It really dented his career like that.

this post has no logic...
LL beefed with Marley too, and he later produced his best album. Fuk, KRS dissed the Juice Crew over a Marley Beat, yep.

How does it have no logic?
I did at one time wonder why he is always overlooked and then realized that the battle with KRS had alot to do with it.

Because his best selling album (Mamma Said) was after the KRS beef. Does everyone know that "The Bridge is Over" was a stolen Marley beat?

What do sales have to do with anything? We are talking about him getting props. ALOT of people view him as taking one of the biggest L's in hip hop and ignore his body of work.
He could have sold 30 million and it wouldnt change the fact the battle with KRS has seemed to dent his reputation.
I think people of a certain age count him as one of the greatest. To me he is def. a top5 producer of all time. If he'd have been more prolific in the second half of the 90's he wuldnt be slept on
K-Def ...def. underated

yeah thing about him not doing much in the second half of the 90's is true, I heard that he was angry about the fact that def jam ain't pay him for his work on mama said... (and still hasn't) and that made him lose a lot of passion for the rap game

True, if you know your music, you know Marley is one of the greats. But the guy stopped makin music, on a consistent basis. He went from bein one of the most busy producers, to just doin radio.
Not for nothin though, Mama Said Knock You Out, is Marley's best produced album, or work EVER!! If you dont own this, change that.

Thats word, between him and Pete all those years they did Future Flavas they were just mad at the game and pretty much neglected their natural talents.
Not to get on the rumor tip, but i heard at one point Marley used to have ghost-producers... or buy beats off cats. I wonder if this is true, and if it is, does it affect his legacy.

My personal favourite Marley Marl production:
LL Cool J - Strictly For The Haters:
http://rapidshare.de/files/4966929/LL_Cool_J_-_Strictly_For_The_Haters.mp3.html
It was released as a 12" only in Japan so it hasn't been heard by that many people.

Thats the thing though, any very successfull producer/beat maker seems to have some hating ass muh****a come out and spread rumors like they have ghost-beat makers.
Someone who knows his catalog a little bit better than I do should be able to tell you that his beats all sound like his beats. The way he lays down the keys on alot of tracks sounds like his style.

The last great album Marley did and the best L.L album. Too many good songs to name, but i'll do it anyway:"Mamma Said," "the boomin' system", "eat 'em up l", "murdergram", "jinglin' baby" remix, "mr good bar", "milky cereal", "around the way girl", "to the break of dawn", "the power of god", "cheesy rat blues"
Marley Marl is the God Father of Boom Bap.
I think part of the reason is that a lot of cats nowadays don't know who produced all that stuff because mp3s don't come with production credit notes...
as for why he's never gotten the publicity he should've I dunno... usually NYC blows up its people large, but he never got that treatment... shame.

marley was the illest
but hes ignorant and selfish
he doesnt want anyone makin money of off him no one does but look at dre
cats make their money but at the end of the day dre will make the most
he could be the east coast dre which it should be the other way around
of course hes iller than dre but i mean with artists
why couldnt he have his own label and have all the queens artist on his ****
there are so many nas, mobb, organized, 50, trag, cnn, everyone
he should be behind the scenes like dre and just sign his name on all tracks
ive been to his house in spring valley he has a million dollar studio
plus a radio studio where he has done futureflavas and pirate radio from
instead hes doin independent bull**** that no one cares about

its a shame, that krs-1 dented his career, only to have KRS-1 served by nelly
(How pathetic was that sh*t)
Marley marl=one of my personal favorite producers...
Could be easier for me to say cause I'm 26, so when The Bridge is Over Came out, I wasn't following rap music at the moment, and I guess the song did not have that much of a impact on me, if I was 16 at the time that song dropped, and was following what was going on, I would have been on some "Oh sh*t man Kris just rocked him"

I read in an interview that Marley Marl took Warner Bothers to court over those Cold Chillin albums. Most of the Juice Crew was on Cold Chillin from like 87-91. Cold Chillin was a subsidery (sp?) of Warner Brothers.
Anyway, this lawsuit must have been about 2 or 3 years ago. Marley Marl won the lawsuit and got the masters to all of those Juice Crew LPs.
Biz Markie-
Biz is Goin Off
The Biz Never Sleeps
I Need a Haircut
Big Daddy Kane
Long Live the Kane
Its a Big Daddy Thing
Taste of Chocolate
Marley Marl
In COntrol Vol 1 and 2
Kool G Rap
Road to the Riches
Wanted Dead or Alive
Also, Masta Ace, Roxanne Shante and MC Shan released albums on Cold Chillin.
Grand Daddy IU, Grand Imperial Diamond Shell, Kid Capri and The Genius (GZA) also had albums on Cold Chillin circa 1990/91.
I'm not exactly sure when Cold Chillin folded, and I don't think any of those albums did well commercially by todays standards. Biz and Kane may have gone gold, I doubt that any of them went multi plat but who knows? I know there was alot of sampling and that Biz Markie LP "I Need a Haircut" is the landmark sampling song that made sampling illegal, so I'm not sure how much money those albums are worth if they just about all contain unauthorized samples. But just considereing the fact that Marley Marl Executive Produced all of those albums, he must have seen some serious paper from those albums. Especially since he owns The masters.
I'm sure he can eat for the rest of his life without ever lifting a finger.
