Who Had A Bigger Influence? Who Had A Better 1st Album.... 2nd Album...???

For me, both could be the prototype for the essence of an MC. Good voices, strong lyrics, dope flows, solid albums, PIONEERS (leaders, not followers).

BUT...if I were forced to pick one, it'd be Ra...he worked words & idealogies that (for me) were unknown into his rhyme-schemes & made me 'see' everything he was talking about clearly...

"...So follow me and were ya thinkin' you were first?
Let's travel at magnificent speeds around the Universe
What could ya say as the Earth gets further and further away
Planets are small as balls of clay
Astray into the Milky Way - world's outasight
Far as the eye can see - not even a satellite
Now stop and turn around and look
As ya stare in the darkness, ya knowledge is took!
So keep starin soon ya suddenly see a star
You better follow it cause it's the R
This is a lesson if ya guessin and if ya borrowin
Hurry hurry step right up and keep followin
The Leader..."

Bigger influence and better first and second albums was what I used to base my pick.

I went with The Smooth Operator myself. Kane was the complete package. Lyrics, punchlines, charisma, looks and even dropped some knowledge. I want to say he was the perfect emcee. I think further down the line he started feeling himself too much and lost focus, but if you listen to Raw (with the intro verse) that is the definition of an emcee.

Intro, I start to go/ My rhymes will flow/
so/ get out ya seats 'cause Kane said so/
If you were loungin around, it's time to git up/
Pardon my expression, but I'ma tear sh*t up/ :king:

I went with Kane, but I'm bias because that's the first album I ever bought.

Suddenly you feel like your in a horror flick,
You grab your heart then wish for tomorrow quick!
Music's the clue, when I come your warned,
Apocolypse Now, when I'm done, ya gone!
Haven't you ever heard of a MC-murderer?
This is the death penalty, and I'm servin' a
death wish, so come on, step to this
hysterical idea for a lyrical professionist!
Friday the thirteenth, walking down Elm Street,
you come in my realm ya get beat!
This is off limits, so your visions are blurry,
All ya see is the meters at a volume,
pumping Lyrics of Fury!

Remember how the beat was behind this

I dotn agree at all, Rakim has dropped mindblowing lyrics until this day. Big daddy Kane hasnt fared as well but he still does shows and all the way up till 95 he coudl fill stadiums and hold his own with newcomers like biggie and pac (notice how everybody calls the famous biggie pac shyheim BDK freestyle is called the biggie and pac freestyle)

Back then my Favorite Rappers were

1) KANE
2) Slick Rick
3) KRS~1
4) Rakim
5) LL

In Retrospect I guess Ra may have been a lil better overall (prolly only cause of what happened to Kane after "A Taste of Chocolate") I dunno

But IMHO

Set it Off, R.A.W., Wrath of Kane, Aint No Half Steppin', = I Aint No Joke, And >>>>>>>>>>> Follow the Leader, I Got Soul, Know the Ledge(?wutever?)

This is difficult to choose from since both at that time were coming with straight heat. I'd have to go with Kane on this one but this judgment pertains to the time period and not what happened with their careers later. R.A.W. and Ain't No Half Steppin'

Rakim for me. I like both but I've always had a soft spot for Paid In Full... It has more joints I *love* than Long Live The Kane.

Kane is ill, no doubt but if you sit and listen to what Rakim was doing when he first came out and then listen to hip hop now........itll blow your mind. Talk about being ahead of your time Ra is the very definition.

Cant argue with that, family.

Im a younger dood but when I go back and put on ANY of Ra's verses whether its vinyl or an mp3 hes even ahead of the MCs right now. In a few years it will be 20 years after the fact. To me that just blows my mind.

No disrespect to Nas but hes trying to do now what Ra was doing decades ago and hes the best lyricist (IMO) out right now.

Not untill I listend to The Very Best of Big Daddy Kane a few weekes ago did I realize how dope BKD was. BUT...Ra still the GOAT to me. Everybody above me has proved a point. I just wanna say, all talent/skills/originality aside, Ra just has that composure and charisma no one else could touch!

Speaking about the 1st album, do y'all know that Ra actually produced most of the tracks, not Eric B. He told in an interview.

that's thing though...at that time BDK was raw....u trying to look back and assemble...like u have hindsight 20/20 vision..Rakim is goat but still at that time period BDK was ill...........seems like most just want to say Rakim was ill at that time just because it's hiphop pc....but BDK was running shiznet at that time

I can't really explain it, it's just personal opinion. Kane is my favourite of the two. I just prefer him to Rakim, but that's not to say I don't think Rakim is amongst GOATs, I just slightly prefer listening to BDK's (primarily his first two) albums. Overall, I'd probably say Ra has a better catalogue though.

I wouldn't call Let The Rhythm Hit Em going to sh1t. It was 5 mic album. It recieved 5 mics(in 90) before the Source went to sh1t. Actually Ra never went to sh1t.

Paid In Full - 5.0
Follow The leader - 5.0
Let The Rhythm Hit Em - 5.0
Don 't Sweat the Technique - 4.5
18th Letter - 4.5
Master - 3.5

Rakim first two albums are little better than Kane's. After It's A Big Daddy Thing Kane's albums were toooooooooooo inconsistent.

Long live The Kane - 5.0
It's A Big daddy Thing - 5.0
Taste of Chocalate - 4.0
Prince of Darkness - 2.5(would be lower but Kane's flow was  )
Looks Like A Job For - 3.5
Daddy's Home - 3.0
Veterans Day - 3.0

Impact wise, "Paid in Full" is one of the most important albums, but it isn't very cohesive

Neither is Long Live. Paid and Long Live are both really just a collection of Classic Singles. Their sophmore albums are cohesive classics.

this is the way I look at it... on the whole "Standing on the shoulders of giants to see further than we ever have" mantra.. Nas and Gza are both the new Rakim's. I think Gza is probably the more advanced, but Nas has the crowd control aspect Gza lacks and Rakim had. I don't think it's necessarily fair to compare Nas or Gza to Rakim, cause they were both so heavily influenced by him. That track on streets disciple about rakim was ill.

In this discussion tho... 1st albums, nothing is fukking with paid in full.

R and the A stands for RA, switch it around, it still comes out AR....

sohh ahead of it's time.

Kane's album is excellent, Kane is a great MC, maybe better than Rakim at his pinnacle, but on first albums, this isn't really debateable

phatphuck
10-01-05, 02:22 PM
if it's based strictly on their first album then imma give it to kane. when i listen to an MC, the first thing that grabs my attention is their mic presence. listen to set it off...that alone ****s on paid in full IMO

catalogue wise its a whole different story though, kane fell off hard in the early 90s. last joint i heard from rakim was watcher part 2 and he's still dope

A better comparison would have been Rakim's 2nd LP vs Kane's 1st LP. Heres why;

Eric B is President/My Melody 12" came out summer 86

I Know You Got Soul 12" came out spring 87

The Paid in Full LP came out summer 87
(Criminal Minded and Bigger and Deffer also came out that summer)

At the end of the summer, like late August 87/early september (I remember it was back to school as I was starting 9th grade), the "Just Rhymin W/ Biz" 12" came out <<<-- This means that Kane had probably already heard Paid in Full LP when this single came out. I'm 100% certain Kane had heard "Eric B is President and "My Melody" as those songs were 1 full year old.

Raw/ Word to the Mother 12" came out early winter 87

Long live the Kane and Follow the leader both came out in the summer of 88. From my recollection, Long Live the Kane came out first, like around June while Follow the Leader came out a lil later, like July.

So when Long Live the Kane came out in the summer of 88, Paid in Full was already 1 year old. I'm sure, Kane had listened to and studied Paid in Full (along with Criminal Minded and Bigger and Deffer) as he was working on Long Live the Kane. So it is unfair to compare the 2 albums. It would be like comparing Illmatic to Reasonable Doubt instead of comparing It Was Written to Reasonable Doubt.

To put it in perspective

Paid in Full - Summer of 87

Long Live the Kane - Summer of 88 (I think Long Live the Kane was 1st)
Follow the Leader - Summer of 88

Its a Big Daddy Thing - late summer/fall 89 (I'd say Sep/Oct 89)

Let the Rhythem Hit em - Summer 90

Taste of Chocolate - late fall/early winter 90 (I'd say Nov/Dec 90)

The only 2 albums that would be a fair comparison would be Long Live the Kane vs Follow the leader. Because neither artist had heard the other album.

I THOUGHT ABOUT THAT.... BUT THEN FIGURED I WOULD COMPARE THE FIRST ALBUM FROM EACH.... THEY STILL KNEW EACH OTHER AND STILL HEARD OF EACH OTHER... KANE HAD SINGLES OUT FOR RAW AND GETTIN FUNKY WITH BIZ AND A FEW OTHERS ON PRISM WHICH WERE DROPPED ON VINYL WAY BEFORE LONG LIVE THE KANE CAME OUT. AROUND THE SAME TIME (ROUGHLY) AS PAID IN FULL.
