the simplicity, the uniqueness, the variety
back in the day you could tell who was who just by the sound of a record .. it felt like an artist presenting a piece of work as opposed to just some random guy rapping over the beat of the month by the hottest producers
and also as someone else pointed out, you had conscious, gangsta, hip hop, political, etc, etc all side by side with eachother .. you could listen to epmd then fresh prince then public enemy then big daddy kane then n.W.a and it all flowed .. now it's almost only one style of rap: gangsta or hustler
and the thing i miss the most is the simplicity of pre-95 rap .. back then you didn't have to had ice in your grill and a $300k watch on your wrist and 20 big booty b1tches in order to make a dope song .. you could rock a t-shirt and jeans and just kick some dope rhymes and it was all good

I was listening to Stet yesterday. And being a fan of Prince Paul, I miss sampling.

I thought u was from Houston? Ya'll got down like that??
And you didnt even need high budget videos for them to be dope. Stuff like "Leflu Leflah.." where niccas is just in a room rappin in Tims and replica jerseys lol, aint even have jewels on. You would have like 4 videos for one album, since they aint cost but like $5,000 to make

I miss being able to go to the store and pick out just about any hip-hop album and knowing that the artist would bring something new to the table. Whether lyrically, sonically, socially, in one way or another you would be able to vibe with them in a different way and get a fresh perspective. Everybody was trying to outdo the cats that came before them.
To put it in a sentence...
The thing I miss most about hip-hop from back in the day, is the constant progression that took place from one album to the next.
You were always checkin for the next big album. Nowaday's, any hip-hop fan is left searchin for a diamond in the desert.

I miss the mics in The Source being legitimate...
"actual" remixes, like someone said earlier...
Midnight Marauders and Enter The Wu-Tang dropping on the same day...
Doggystyle and No Need For Alarm dropping on the same day...
Oh and I think everyone remembers what they were doing the first time they heard "Shook Ones Pt. 2"

Even though HipHop & R'n'b always did work together, there was still room for the straight HipHop acts, hence you could tell the difference...But now, HipHop & R'n'b are soo glued together mainstreamwise that people cannot tell the difference
