Am I missing something? The East hasnt been running shyt since BIG. The South has had a strangle hold on hip hop since about 98. No other regoin has made more money independently or mainstream.

I dont consider Em or Nelly east coast so you can scratch that.
Umm in 97 and 98 No Limit (as much as I hate P) and CMR were selling a gang of albums and lets not even talk about the underground cats who make more money independently than most major artists. Its a fact man. Buy the Dirty States of America DVD and you'll see for yourself. The only cats out of the East who have been moving major units are Jay and 50. Thats not enough.
and how are you gonna try to eliminate Outkast? Am I missing something or did they not just move 5 million copies of Speakerboxxx/Love Below and win album of the year. They go at least 3X platinum with every release.

not really...

anyways you can nitpick at that list all u want

fact of the matter is outkast is the only consistant selling south act thats even on the eminem/nelly/50 level

so like i said ..i wouldnt exactly call that a "stranglehold"

em and nelly arent south either so YOU can scratch that...

the only cats out of the east moving major units are jay and 50? well 2/5 aint bad...

theres only 5 acts total moving that amount... one city is accountable for almost half..

still not a stranglehold

We got the rap game locked it's just that you don't want to know it.

SCENE: Your favorite east coast label's conference room.

CEO: Alright, this is MC Brooklyns' third album: He has to do big numbers to keep this label alive. We think he has the skills, but what can put this project over the top?

A&R #1: Well we've got to make sure he starts some beef with someone. Maybe Ludacris, Lil' Flip, The Game...

CEO: (cuts him off) NO, NO, NO! Nobody from the west! We can't have a redux of that 'east vs. west' thing. We had to pay the radio stations out here to not play "Bow Down" and it was still the #2 album in the country! We can't afford that again.

A&R #2: Plus, we have Luda and Flip on the album already so we can get regional play down south.

CEO: Right. How about production?

A&R #1: We got tracks from DJ Premier and Havoc, but we're probably gonna lead with the single with the Dre beat then follow with the track from Lil' Jon. We would've had the Dre track released already, but he's been mixing it for 3 weeks. Kanye would be down too, but he wants to rap over the track he gives us. It samples that one song "Chicago Is My Kind Of Town", so that'd have to be a 'rep your city' type joint. Are we okay with that?

CEO: (sighs)...okay, do it. I'm afraid we're waiting on Dre we're gonna have to push this back again- but it will be worth it.

A&R #2: man, this job was alot easier in '94...

(end scene)

oh, no...it's not bad at all, but recognize.

In the source a few years ago (I think when I Want It All was about to come out), they interviewed Warren and he said Russell told him that Regulate...G Funk Era (4 mil) and Take A Look Over Your Shoulder were carrying Def Jam for a while. On the R&B tip, that's the time when Montell Jordan was blowing up.

Mef and Red were there then as well, not to mention a few other acts who were doing it, Take A Look hardly saved that damn label and G Funk Era was what 93???? There was ALOT coming out of Def Jam at that time, to say his albums saved the label is a flat out damn joke.

Well is PSK really a gangsta rap song compared to 6 in the morning. They came out the same year. PSK was first but if you put lyrics up for both songs you tell which one sounds like a gangsta rap song. PSK is vague while 6 in the Morning is out in the open. Rappers were making references to guns and other crimes vaguely before Schooly D. Schooly deserves credit but not as much as Ice T.
"PSK"
PSK, we're makin that green
People always say, "What the hell does that mean?"
P for the people who can't understand
How one homeboy became a man
S for the way we scream and shout
One by one I'm knockin you out
K for the way my DJ kuttin
Other MC's, man, they ain't sayin nothin
Rockin on to the brink of dawn
I think, Code Money, yo time is on (2x)

Drivin in my car down the avenue
Towin on a j, sippin on some brew
Turn around, see the fly young lady
Pull to the curb and park my Mercedes
Sayin, "Fly lady, now you're lookin real nice
Sweeter than honey, sugar and spice"
Told her my name was MC Schoolly D
All about makin that cash money
She said, "Schoolly D, I know your game
Heard about you in the hall of fame"
I said, "Mama, mama, I tell you no lies
Cause all I wanna do is to get you high
And eh - lay you down and do the body rock
To the wall, to the corner," got into the car
Took a little trip to a fancy bar
Copped some brew, some j, some coke
Tell you now, brother, this ain't no joke
She got me to the crib, she laid me on the bed
I ****ed her from my toes to the top of my head
I finally realized the girl was a whore
Gave her ten dollars, she asked me for some more

PSK, we're makin that green
People always say, "What the hell does that mean?"
P for the people who can't understand
How one homeboy became a man
S for the way we scream and shout

Other MC's, man, they ain't sayin nothin
Rockin on to the brink of dawn
I think, Code Money, yo time is on

Clinton Road one Saturday night
Towin on a cheeba I was feelin alright
Then my homie-homie called me on the phone
His name is Chief Keith, but we call him Bone
Told me 'bout this party on the Southside
Copped my pistols, jumped into the ride
Got at the bar, copped some flack
Copped some cheeba-cheeba, it wasn't wack
Got to the place, and who did I see
A sucker-ass ***** tryin to sound like me
Put my pistol up against his head
I said, "Sucker-ass *****, I should shoot you dead"
A thought ran across my educated mind
Said, man, Schoolly D ain't doin no time
Grabbed the microphone and I started to talk
Sucker-ass *****, man, he started to walk

PSK, we're makin that green
People always say, "What the hell does that mean?"
P for the people who can't understand
How one homeboy became a man
S for the way we scream and shout
One by one I'm knockin you out

Other MC's, man, they ain't sayin nothin
Rockin on to the brink of dawn

6 in the Morning
6'n the morning' police at my door
Fresh adidas squerk across the bathroom floor
Out the back window I make a escape
Don't even get a chance to grab my old school tape

Mad with no music but happy 'cause I'm free
And the streets to a player is the place to be
Gotta knot in my pocket weighin' at least a grand
Gold on my neck my pistols close at hand

I'm a self-made monster of the city streets
Remotely controlled by hard hip hop beats
But just livin' in the city is a serious task
Didn't know what the cops wanted
Didn't have the time to ask

-Word-

Seen my homeboys coolin' way out told 'em bout my mornin'
Cold bugged' em out shot allmenn little dice until my knees got sore
Kicked around some stories bout the night before
Possed to the corner where the fly girls chill

Through action at some freaks until one ***** got ill
She started actin' stupid simply would not quit
Called us all punk pussies said we all weren't ****
As we walked over to here hoe continued to speak

So we beat the ***** down in the god damn street
But just livin' in the city a serious task
***** didn't know what hit her didn't have time to ask

-Word-

Continued clockin' freaks with emcee posterior
Rollin' in allmenn blazer with a louie interior
Solid gold the ride was raw
Bust allmenn left turn was on Crenshaw

Sean-e-sean was the driver Known to give freaks hell
Had a beeper goin' off like a high school bell

Looked in the mirror what did we see ?
****in' blue lights L.A. P.D.
Pigs searched our car, their day was made
Found allmenn uzi, 44 and a handgranade

Threw us in the county high power block
No freaks to see no beats to rock
Didn't want trouble but the **** must fly
Squabbled this sucker shanked' em in the eye

But livin' in the county is a serious task
Niga didn't know what happend
Didn't have time to ask

Back on the streets after five and a deuce
Seven years later but still had the juice
My homeboy Ken Gee put me up the track
Told me E's rollin' Villain - BJ's got the sack

Bruce is a giant - Nat C's clockin' Dough
Be bop's a pimp. My old freaks a hoe
The batter rams rollin' rocks are the thing
Life has no meaning and money is king

Then he looked at me slowely and Hen had to grin
He said Man you out early we thought you got ten
Opened his safe kicked me down with cold cash
Knew I would get busy- He didn't waste time to ask

-word-

I bought a Benz with the money the rest went to clothes
Went to the strip strted pimpin' the hoes
My hair had grew long on my seven year stay
And when I got it done on my shoulders it lay

Hard from the joint but fly to my heart
I didn't want no trouble but the **** had to start
Out with my crew some ounks got loud
Shot gun blasts echoed throug the crowd

Six punks hit two punks died
All casualities appiled to their side
Human lives has to pass just for talking much trash
We didn't know who they were - No one had the time to ask

-Word-

Part Two

Swat team leader yelled hit the floor
Reached in my pocket pulled my 44
Dove across the room peeped out the window
Twenty cops jumped behind a Pinto
Out the back door like some damn track stars
Broke down an alley jumped into a car

Suckers didn't even see us They musta been Blind
Black wire touched red the car was mine
We hadn't done nothin' but some suckers got shot
Hit the first turn god damn road block

Broke through the block and we did it fast
Cops wouldn't shot us on sight
They wouldn't took time to ask

-Word-

The rollers gave chase at a serious speed
One more conviction was all I need
This **** was for real

This was no La-Di-Da-Di
Cause the boys had to pin the **** on somebody
And me and my crew we were known to get ill
We carried heat for protection but not to kill

We bust a corner doin 60 one police car spun
And all I was thinkin was murder one
Bust a move into an alley and did it right
And me and my vrew we're gone into the night

Broke to my old lady's who drew me a bath
She didn't even know what happend
Didn't care Didn't ask

-Word-

Qwe made love like crazy on top of the sheets
This girlie was my worlie a natural freak
She ran her tonuge over each and every part of me
Then she rocked my amadeus as I watched TV

A technican with a mission that's what she was
If there had been a crowd she would of got an applause
This girl did everything on earth to me that could be done
The she backed off and teased me so I couldn't come

Then she cold got stupid pushed me on the floor
Had me beggin' to stop as I was acreamin' for more
After she waxed by body she let me crash
She knew her lovin' was def
She didn't waste time to ask

Up the next mornin' feelin good as hell
Sleepin' with a girlie sure beats a cell
Hit the boulevard in my A.M.G.
Hoe's catchin' whiplash tryin' to glimpse the T

Ring on my mobile yes celluar
Got to have a phone when I'm in my car
Was my homeboy Red Some say he's insane
Broke his ***** jaw for smkin' came

Told me to meet him at the airporrt
Said he's jumpin' bail said he just left court
Caught the first thing smokin' in a serious dash
Didn't know where we were going.
Didn't care Didn't ask

-Word-

Fell a sleep on the plane and so did he
Woke up chillin' in N.Y.C.
Called up my posse when I got there
Hit the Latin qarter Union Square

Rooftop Devil's nest the rest we passed
Back doored the Palladium just for class
About 4 am we crashed the deuce
We never catch static 'cause my boys got juice

Deuced it to the Bronx to rest our heads
Where a shoot out jumped off mine people lay dead
It sounded like it happend with a mac 10 blast
But it was 6'in the mornin'
We didn't wake up to ask.....

Both classic songs but 6 is a REAL Gangsta song. Not until a few years ago were some people jumping on the PSK is the first gangsta rap song. N@ggas weren't saying that 10 years ago. And if Schooly D invented Gangsta Rap. Well Schooly D may of planted the seed but I doubt he going for that. Ice T was. Ice-T pulled no punches with 6. This is where Gangsta Rap started. Mele Mel started reality rap. Ice-T started gangsta rap. NWA made it popular.

I really dont give a fukk what "n@ggas" were saying 10 years ago...ICE MOTHERFUKKIN T SAID IT HIS DAMN SELF... what more proof do u need? why is it so hard for u to just admit gangsta rap started in philly... it is what it is....

To take nothing away from Schooly but if you follow his career he was not a gangsta rapper, neither was KRS-One. And Kool G. didn't start really focusing on that until the 2nd album. But I guess we will have to agree to disagree. You say Schooly I say Ice T. It's all good it's all hiphop. It's just too bad you hate on other s@#t from other regions. Everyone has favorites but damn you take hating to thee extreme. I'm glad I'm not like that. I would of missed on some good s@#t from Houston like Geto Boys, Scarface and OG Style, Big Mike from New Oreleans, Outkast and Goodie Mob from Atlanta, Poison Clan from Miami, Poor Rightous Teachers from Trenton New Jersey, Common from Chicago, Bone from Cleveland, 3X Dope, Schooly D, Jazzy Jeff and Fresh Prince, Cash Money and Marvelous from Philly, Ultramagnectic MC's, BDP, from the Bronx, Pete Rock & Cl Smooth from Mt Vernon and so on. The game was so diverse and dope back then. I hope one day we can reclaim that again.

Well I didn't know Ice T was quoted as saying Schooly D invented Gangsta Rap. I've never read or heard him say those exact words. If he did cool. But judging both songs one looks like some gansta s@#t the other doesn't.

I feel Schooly help give Ice the idea but he did not intend to do some gangsta s@#t. The two songs speak for themselves. We can argue until we are blue in the face but that fact remains one song is about gangsta s@#t the other has a reference that may have sparked Ice-T to write a song about gangsta s@#t. Ice ran with that his whole career. Schooly didn't.

well now you know....and again...just realize everything evolves...what was considered "gangsta rap" then probably doesnt sound like whats gangsta rap today which probably wont sound like whats gangsta rap 10 years from now....things change...

but the first evolution or stage of gangsta rap was p.s.k...then it EVOLVED and SHIFTED or G R E W into ice- which became what NWA was doing which turned to g-funk which turned into the g-unit stuff today.....

it all changes..its an ongoing evolutionary process...

Can I see the quote where Ice T says straight up Schooly invented gangsta rap? What if Ice said the Messege by Mele Mel sparked the idea for him to write 6 In The Morning? Would that make Mele Mel the inventor of Gangsta Rap? If Schooly went own to make noise as a gangsta rapper I would agree with you but he didn't. Run-DMC and some other before them mentioned weed/cheeba in their songs but does that make them the inventors of that type of Hip Hop. The Lyrics I posted above for both songs tell the real story. Ice T is the Godfather of Gangsta Rap and Schooly sparked the idea to do that type of music. I know it's hard that you had to reach on down to Philly to discredit the West. Coast. Well at least you are not on the nuts of New York this time.

i'm not talking about in 2004, i'm talking about yall getting destroyed from 94->97 and not even putting up a real fight.

and yeah, drop a gem on em and NY NY are close in terms of lyricism and overall song. But NY NY's video made the song a much better diss.

lol wtf u talkin bout like ur the only one who knows **** or was listenin to hiphop back then. what happened in 94 or 95 that made u include those years?? man desparate people will try anything, the disses started at 96 maybe late 95 so u can remove those years from ur list. ice cube was one of the first to start it with that hiphop started in the west, ice cube rollin in the east without a vest. which was 96, e40s diss on az was 96/97, pac neva dissed east in 94 or 95 so u can take out some of those years couz u was tryin to make ur case stronger. dogg food on the other hand were ny ny was on was in 95 but very late in the year and there was a response so it shouldnt count

Mef and Red were there then as well, not to mention a few other acts who were doing it, Take A Look hardly saved that damn label and G Funk Era was what 93???? There was ALOT coming out of Def Jam at that time, to say his albums saved the label is a flat out damn joke.

1. True, other artists were there- but they weren't selling like Warren.
2. I didn't say the above- Russell said it. Think about that span (94-97), who was on Def Jam?

Trigga & Smoove
LL (only person CLOSE to G-Child)
Method
Red
EPMD (broke up)
Slick Rick (you know where he was)
Foxy (wasn't fuccin' with Warrens' units)
