View Full Version : Who's The King Of Dancehall?
Great thread. The only guys how should be mention are Buju, Bounty, and beenie. Buju has the best album but he also had the greatest reign from Browning hit Jamaica he was just the MAN till like 95, he released like a great song per week. Then Bounty and Beenie came on the scene around the same time and if I’m correct I believed bounty won the battle between the two, greatest battle of all time regardless of music class Bounty has the better substance and credibility with the people while beenie has the better flow/delievery. Ask the chicks in Jamaican they will say beenie ask the guys its bounty. I would choose buju because he is a mix between the two from hits to substance but not as much gun talk as bounty and the substance in his music pushes him ahead of both, end of thread, oh and buju is the closest you will get to Bob Marley, its astonishing how the guy made a hit about were a fuuking condom, his consciousness in his songs from beginning to now is just unbelievable.
man thanx for all this. nice lesson learned.
it would be nice if someone can make a connection btwn shabba ranks and these 2. for a while i thought shabba ranks had it on lock.

LOL at Buju not being Dancehall.
I know he does dancehall, but I prefer his reggae sh!t over those joints anyday. But that's just me.

Buju seems more on a roots vibe these days. I'll go with these three personally:
1. Capleton
2. Vybez Kartel
3. Elephent Man

For the dude about a war between Beenie and Bounty for the King title. First Beenie isnt really clashing on that tune the lyrics are talking about sexing a girl. Next most of you know nothing about dancehall, and i can understand the only people you hear are the commercial artistes, shaggy, beenie, sean paul. However in the Dancehall bounty is the man, his songs are staple in any form of dance, whether clashing or juggling. His oldest songs are played every night at the many dances and still recieve the greatest forwards. Buju is by far a great artist and has been consistant, but he has not influenced the dancehall like bounti. There would be no Kartel without bounty backing the dude. When kartel was unheard of Bounty allowed took trks written by kartel. For true dancehall listeners 'bounties, 'warlord rule the world" was originally written by Kartel.
Bounty Killa is the best all time dancehall artist IMO followed by Beenie Man and Buju. Capelton was up there too although I think he does more reggae styled music now.

I dont understant what your talking about, no direspect? But Beenie and Bounty were going at each other with songs like every week in 94 to 95 if i remember Correctly.

I’ll do the best that I can because I was really young during his reign. But Shabba had a 2 to 3 year reign where he had a lot of hits that centered on the girls, thus lack the guy’s approval. When he became big in United States he took a hit in his jamiacan appeal, when he became big in America in jamiaca he was just okay at the time. Plus I believed he lost a battle at sting ( a huge even in jamiaca were DJ/MCs usually do public battles) to Ninja man a artist that is very street oriented. He tried to do some street songs but his buzz was not the same. Plus Buju hit the game at this time with a song called Browning and it was just his time. So basically I believed he focused too much on America and forgot his roots and without it there is nothing to stand on. I believed he still had the ability to make hits but he just did not release anything during Buju reign or it was not good enough or the American dollar was just too good, peace.

I generally agree with u overall except for that BUJU is the closest to BOB MARLEY. Sizzla is the one I've heard everybody at yard saying is next to BOB. Granted his faults are obvious, but when he hits he hits. Biggest thing right now is JAHCURE anyway, but sum of u don't understand that though he influenced it greatly, BOB MARLEY and sum of these artists are generally not dancehall, their jus plain, good ole' conscious reggae. Sizzla does both though.Sumtimes he hits, sumtimesa he misses with it. But a great artist of his time nonetheless

Just getting into dancehall, anyone recommend me some shyt I'd appreciate it.
From what I've heard so far Barrington Levy, Buju Banton and Sizzla. Buju especially, he has the illest voice. I don't know about Elephant Man he seems a bit monotonous but then I haven't heard much.

It's a bunch of great artists u jus gotta be up on the riddims basically. But sum of my selects are, Bounty, Baby Cham, Assasin, Vybez Kartel . Then u hav slow reggae artists Beres Hammond, Sanchez,Dennis Brown. Culture artists JAH CURE, JAH MASON, Richis Spice, Anthony B, , IMO Sizzla's The better artists but he's always being compared to Capleton so Maybe u wanna check him out too if u got Sizzla on ur list
