A letter to the Black Caucus from a Black woman living in South Central

by Donna J. Warren

“We respect your right to run, Mr. Nader. Withdraw.” - Elijah Cummings, chair of the Congressional Black Caucus of the United States House of Representatives

To Rep. Cummings and members of the Black Caucus,

You demanded independent candidates Ralph Nader and Peter Camejo withdraw from the presidential race in favor of NAFTA approving, Iraq invading, Afghanistan bombing, Sudanese pharmaceutical plant bombing, right-wing Israeli prime minister and convicted murderer Ariel Sharon supporting, impeachment of George W. Bush for the forced removal of democratically elected President Jean Bertrand Aristide refusing, and mandatory minimum sentencing supporting - John Kerry.

Kerry’s contempt for human rights, international law, arms control and the United Nations is unforgivable.

“Anyone but Bush” was your cry when Nader and Camejo visited your offices in late June. But let’s be honest - when Bush delivered lie after lie after lie during his state of the union addresses, it was the Democrats who stood and clapped. The Democrats made the monster George Bush!

You don’t challenge the Democrats and Republicans in their abdication of our communities, but you challenge Nader and Camejo for fighting for our communities. During your meeting, you condemned Nader for choosing Camejo, who speaks Spanish fluently, because you fear Malcolm X’s friend will take away your brown votes!

Peter Camejo changed the minds and hearts of Californians to oppose California’s horrendous Three Strikes law during his campaign for governor. Three Strikes imprisons African Americans 12 to 1 for every white person for the same non-violent crime.

What have you done for us?

Does it matter to you that your constituents are hurt by redlining, lead-based paint poisoning, predatory lending, pay day loan rackets, and dirty meat? It matters to Ralph Nader.

Does it matter to you that student Nader challenged Harvard University when they published the lie that Blacks are inferior to whites? It matters to me.

Does it matter to you that only Nader campaigned in Ward 8 of the District of Columbia, exposing that 65,000 people live without a single supermarket, yet the District of Columbia has had Black mayors and a Black city council for the last 35 years? It matters to your constituents.

What are you afraid of? That Nader and Camejo may “mess up your little party” because they advocate for Black Americans and you don’t.

“Anyone but Bush” is your mantra. But even if Bush self-destructs, how can you support John Kerry without demanding a mandate? Corporate interests pull the Democrats 24 hours a day. Without a mandate to pull John Kerry in a progressive direction, there’s no way you can demand equity.

You told Ralph Nader you wanted him out of the race so Bush can’t appoint another right-winger to the Supreme Court, but let’s look at the record.

l Kerry promises to appoint anti-abortion judges while professing to protect a woman’s right to choose.

l The Senate Democrats confirmed right-wing Supreme Court Judge Antonin Scalia 98-0. Not one Democratic senator, including Gore, opposed Scalia.

l The Democrats could have blocked right-wing Supreme Court Judge Clarence Thomas’ confirmation - they were in control of the Senate - but 11 Democrats moved across the line to confirm Thomas 52-48 while Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell sat in his office twirling his thumbs.

You don’t stop anything that hurts us!

l You could have filibustered the tax cut for the wealthy, but you didn’t.

l You could have demanded gas efficient car engines, but instead you sanctioned the SUV and gave the auto companies an eight-year holiday without requiring better gas efficiency.

l You could have opposed genetically engineering foods, the petroleum industry, and the WTO, but you didn’t.

l You could have opposed the federal crime bill which imprisons drug addicts for the drugs our government allowed to flow into the inner cities, but you didn’t.

l You could have opposed the “leave no child behind high stake multiple testing fraud,” but instead you chose to sacrifice our children.

l You could have said “no” to the Patriot Act, but you didn’t.

You don’t represent me!

In 2000, Congressman Julian Dixon sold me out like a $2 dollar whore when, as ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, he announced the CIA was not complicit in the destruction of the inner cities by crack cocaine. I’m tired of being sold out like a $2 dollar whore by Black people living the good life as my representative in our nation’s capitol.

Thomas Paine said in the 1700s: “If there must be trouble, let it be in my day, that my child may have peace.” Ralph Nader and Peter Camejo are voices taking on the trouble of our day so that we and future generations may have peace.

Get off your knees and demand the Democrats stop sabotaging the Nader-Camejo Campaign. Demand Ralph Nader and Peter Camejo be included in the debates. Don’t go down like a punk. Remember the ancestors and stand tall!

Sincerely,

Donna J. Warren, a constituent

This is a great post.

This woman makes a lot of good points but shes totally off base. Nader is doing a lot of things right but in the lesser of two evils presidential elections, even she can not afford to let Bush get reelected. Yes he is worse than Kerry, as bad as that may be. Affecting change is not possible at the presidential level, as Nader has proven for decades. Get his candidates into the state and local legislatures and build up from there. Hes been about as effective as supply side economics.

cosigns... to be real in any other year I would vote for Nader... I support him... I think he is the truth and a real fighter... but in voting for Nader tht would mean voting for Bush... and supporting his bid (especially since many GOPs are bankrolling Nader's presidential bid)... I cannot do tht... I will vote for Kerry even tho I really dont trust him (I trust him more with edwards with him tho)... and see where it goes...

The democraps have a horrendous voting record as a whole, but even I am desperate enough to hope Kerry gets elected to get bush out of office, but no one should have the gaul to tell Ralph Nader who has fought for the little guy all his life that he is a liability, fuk all the lethargic cowards who do.

Kerry's worst evil deed is probably supporting the mandatory minimum legislation, you can't trust Kerry he is an ex prosecutor...prosecutors are right up there with child molestors in the slimeball hall of shame.

Honest Words that came from the heart......Replacing bush with kerry.....is leaving the white supremacist system we have in America untouched.....Why didnt kerry appoint a black or latino person as his runningmate?......because it doesnt pay...he just wants our vote.....so our communitites could be left behind the same way they were during the clinton years.....I always say that I hate the democratic party more than I hate the republicans.....because democrats are the ones that claim to represnt me....to be on my side....which as we know....is not true.

This is true, Clinton certainly not only left behind but also let the black community be targeted for oppression via corrupt mandatory minimum sentencing which effected blacks heavily (as well as my best friend who is white and doing a 10 yr mando judge had no discretion).

Clinton also allowed racial profiling to be a widespread police policy and I imagine he supported it....

....But YOU tend to support conservative right wing policies like more killer cops on the street etc... which are even more detrimental to minorities in america then any policies which democraps complacently allowed...YOU SUPPORT THE PEOPLE WHO CAME UP WITH THESE OPPRESSIVE POLICIES, which makes you a COMPLETE FUKKING idiot...if you attacked the republicunts as much as you did the democraps then you might gain some respect, but look at you dog, you support the bush administration's war and domestic policies, you're a complete fukkin joke in that sense.

.....Why didnt kerry appoint a black or latino person as his runningmate?

So that makes him racist? And having a black running mate would automatically mean he wasn't?

Blacks cannot possibly be represented by anyone who isn't themself black? Suppose every ethnic group took that view, should we all just break into race-based factions & isolate ourselves?

Nader is the candidate for the people everyone knows that. But the truth is people dont want to waste their vote on him because they think hes going to reelect bush. If Bush gets reelected it's not because of Ralph Nader its because The democrats didnt put up a good enough candidate. It's the people's choice to whom they want to vote for. If you want kerry because you dont like bush than vote for him. But if you are for a real democracy and you believe that there is still a chance for the citizen in this country than vote Nader. And further more. Kerry takes contributions from the same companies that Bush does so why is it a big deal if Nader takes money from an individual republican. Arn't republicans people too? Why didnt you get both sides of the story and read that Nader doesnt take money from corporations. If you really knew your facts you would realize that he only takes from individuals and not the corrupt scumbags that the republicans and democrats soldout this country too.

homie... I hope u arent attacking me... cuz it was unjust... I like Ralph Nader... I think he is the best candidate this conutry has had in a while... he was tht in 2000... if I were old enough in 2000 I woulda voted for him... I told my mom (who is a blind democrat) to vote for Nader... it doesnt matter who Nader gets money from... thts why I said it doesnt influence him... but if u cannot admit tht GOP businessmen are giving Nader money so tht he can ran and take votes away from Kerry... then u obviously were not paying attention in 2000... or even 1992 with Ross Perot taking George Bush Sr's votes...

I have major issues with the democratic party... a party tht is spose to be in the fight for minorities... yet it really is all just lip service (ie Bill Clinton)... I dont like John Kerry... mainly becuz I dont know him... and becuz all candidates are the same to me when discussing platforms... but with Kerry at least its something different... an unknown... if he comes into office and does the same BS tht Bush is doing or wht Clinton did... then he will not get my vote four years from now and I will either go with the more liberal parties... but until then... I would much rather see someone tht the rest of the world does not know about and could be a change for the better juxtapose someone who every world leader not named Tony Blair and many people in the US hate...

GreyGooseVodka and Mastermind are both intelligent but you're arguing over a minor issue, Nader I think has taken some money from republicunts trying to get him on the ticket to take away kerry votes, but who cares, Ralph Nader should be able to run and be in the debates to bring up real issues. Although I think perhaps he should drop out before the actual election, and run against Kerry in 4 years.

But Nader is far above his cowardly critics who have some nerve to attack the person who's fighting for the people and support the elitist who has a record of oppressing people just because he's "not as bad as bush"

Here's a good question:

If they had to choose, would the democraps rather have George Bush or Ralph Nader elected president? I'm not sure it would be Nader because he would put an end to much of their special interest contributions through executive orders, would bushy do that?

If U live in my neighborhood.....U'd call for more cops on the streets....I dont live in a nice suburd as you do my friend.....I live in grimmy streets....where everyday is a challenge......The cops arent my enemies.....Gang members are the ones that terrorize people in my 'hood.....Drug dealers ready to shoot people are the ones that terrorize the streets.....Cops in my 'hood are friends and not foes.

I dont support the invasion of Iraq just so we can go and take their oil......but I'm not a hypocrite......Saddam husseim was bad mother***** who killed people. Who abused people. Who tortured people.....I cant be in favor of that....and the only way to get the saddams out of power is by ousting him with military might......not by sweet talking him....with SCAMS LIKE THE OIL FOR FOOD......Do U think I'd be against saddam if he was looking out for his people? I'm not a middle-class demagogue as some of you are.....I know what struggle really is.....I know what is like to come from a place where dictators rule.....I know all of that.....Is written all over my history.....something U and none of your well-doing college friends will ever know.

I live five minutes away from Amadou Diallo.....and i dont think U should be using him as an example to define whatever point U're trying to make.

What happened to him was a tragedy......but U cant make 160K cops look bad becuase of what happened to Diallo....Do U live in New York City? Do U know what is like to live in this city? do U remember what it was like in the 70s and 80s? looks different, aint it? big part of that....can be attributed to the NYPD.

that's not what I'm saying.....but why didnt he pick one? or a latino.....blacks and latinos make up close to 35% of the people.....and how about breaking race barriers that keep black and latino in the back rooms where no one can see them.. (like not having a black or latino among his closests 10 advisors as kerry does).
