I took a listen to Dilligence's interview too...

He says the good thing about hip hop is that its starting to be excepted as an artform, but the bad thing is that right now its corporate...all about the money. I agree 90%. Its not that hip hop is corporate or that hip hop as a business is bad, I just think that we LET hip hop, like so many other music genres, be exploited by corporations. I want to make this distinction because I don't want it to be said that cats shouldn't look to earn a living in hip hop...although the type of earnings we expect to make should change.

We want the $1Mil bonuses and the instant celebrity, but cats don't know what business their going into...what type of $$ they should be working for.

Music-Makers ARE NOT in the music business (selling records)! Record companies are in the music business. We are in the property business (leasing valuable artwork...in our case, music)!

Artists, whether they are painters, writers, singers, musicians, earn a living through "royalties" (rental payments of their art). But the moment music artist or producers takes that signing bonus, they change into paid agents for that company, working for "commission". 90% of the property is owned by the company, and a sales commission salary is paid to the artist as a contract worker. But how were we to know this? All we would hear from our hip hop leaders is "money is money! However you can get yours, get it".

My point is that this whole problem was caused by us not knowing that "not all money is the same"...its not the corporations' fault for not telling us. They say that the game of money is a game of "knowledge vs ignorance".
