View Full Version : Why is it gangsta to be ignorant and portray a life of crime???

Shouldn't african americans be disappointed the Cam'ron and his Dip**** set have further helped to reinforce negative stereotypes that have plagued Blacks since our introduction into this white mans society. Why is selling crack and other forms of zombie inducing narcotics something to proud of in our communities. Why is murdering our black brothers something to be proud of, something which bestows credibility in our neighborhoods.
many rappers portray that thug life, but no group has embraced this as much as Cam and his flunkies. Instead of us looking up to jay z and Puffy and master p and Russel simmons for their entreprenuerial spirit and steadfastness we bask in the stupidity and ignorant ******ish attitudes of acts such as 50 cent, Cam'ron and the idiotic Beanie sigel . We need to show these artists that negative portrayals about our communities is irresponsible and shouldn't be tolerated. We are losing the battle to keep hip hop as the dominating music expression for our generation. we have the power to unite the masses to ensure its survival. if we don't send a message that glamourizing the destruction of our race is evil, we as a people shall never realize the fruits of our forefathers labor.

what's gangsta is taking people from their land and killing, raping and enslaving them. Gangsta is letting planes fly into the towers because you're too busy racially profiling licensed drivers. Gangsta is killing your own people with chemical weapons. Gangsta is starting a war for oil. gangsta is lying about weapons of mass destruction. Now should white people be ashamed of that? then why blacks got to identify with every bad thing a black person does. typical white thinking.

I don't see the connection...He is talking about glorifying drug dealers and killers. I don't see whites glorifying slavery, terrorism, mass destruction, etc. I know there are those who do, but they are just as wrong as the people that he is talking about.

i am a proud memeber of the african american persausion. i just find it reprehensible that we as a people find 50 cent and Cam'ron to be gangster and therefore idiolize them because they have good beats. we look past all the negativity that they bring to us as a people, why is it good to have sold crack or been shot. why do we glamourize the thug life, why do we put more emphasis on cars and jewelry than treating our black women with respect and ensuring our kids are raised in a safe environment.
Jay-Z, Master P both glorify guns, violence, drugs, etc...just as much as anyone else.

All that stuff you are against is the definition of "gangsta". If you are against criminal acts and recklesness then you are against "gangsta" in itself. The thread should not be why are these acts gangsta but instead why do people respect and admire "gangsta".

no one looks up to these guys it's just a way of grouping all black together. I don't know about where ya'll live but if you ask the average black kid around here they ain't being gangsta. They ain't selling drugs, robbing and killing. Ofcourse they want to be cool, ofcourse they want nice materialistic things. But every race wants this.
So basically the author of this thread is saying all blacks are idolizing this gangsta life when it's not true. Our parents don't teach us to be gangsta. Our kids see the consequences of thos acts, prison, death and aids they are not envious.
Now you really must be distant from the population if you think just cause it's in a video it's what kids are going to be. That's just ignorant. That's as bad as saying Italians all want to be in the mob cause of the Soprano's. A really simplistic and stupid way to look at our society. Criminals don't commit crimes to be cool. It's out of desparation and feeling they have no other means of survival. Case closed.

look, i understand that hip hop is a business, that many artists rap about these topics to sell records, but you have to acknowledge when something has become a cancer, and right now certain individuals are a cancer ie; 50cent and Camron.
As for the guy that says Jayz and puffy glamourize guns you need to get your facts straight. we all know what puffy is into and thats partying and Jay z has diversified himself so much that i consider him a mogul more than an artist. he doesn't have to rely on gun talk heavily.

Such individuals as Cam'ron and 50 Cent are grown men who make their own decisions, It's not their job to work in the best interests of the African-american community because of what outsiders think,
They're not reinforcing anything, people that have negative attitudes towards hip hop are gonna stay biased regardless, and if idiots like them can't even take the time to dive deeper in this culture and find out that that's only one of aspects of it then their opinon aint **** in the first place.

That's why i find it funny when people ridicule concious music, or "nerd rap" like canibus.
They say things like "us street *****s don't be understanding that crap", openly admitting their lack of education, and their own persistence to remaining ignorant.
And they also say: "you like canibus? you must be white!"
As if they're making fun of whites for liking something intellectual, and at the same time accusing Canibus to be an uncle tom for trying exceed something past the "street" level understanding.
But guess what? What color is canibus? Oh, then he must be trying to be white if he's trying to be smart eh?

It would be "nice" but they probably didn't come up in a "nice" place so their music is gonna reflect that,
The problem is that simple-minded people give the Artists too much power over them.

No one grows up wanting to murder and deal drugs. Never seen a kindergarden student choose crack dealer as his desired occupation. Its the environment that forces these otherwise good people to engage in criminal activity. Atleast I like to think that is partly true. The fact that we live in a world that is very unfair does not help the cause of the poor man. Damn, I aint even poor at all and I still want more be it a pair of shoes, a nice car or a Louis Vuitton wallet. Its the capitalism/consumerism that makes everyone want more. The problem is that if our society stopped buying into the crap that the governments have spent the last 80 years creating, the world economy would collapse.

I agree with you, but you have to accept that the people who believe that rap music accurately depicts black people are naive and if Mos Def or Common were selling like 50 it wouldn't change people perceptions. These ideas are perputuated through the media, and there ain't no way your gonna revamp the media cause the powers who control aint about hearing what the average person has to say.

The people who use the media to confirm or deny their suspicions about a race of people cannot be salvaged. If Mos Def or Common were selling 7 million records, their impressions would not be altered. The media controls people's perceptions if they are able/willing to find out for themselves.

lol,
It's easy for you to sit behind your CPU in a suburb and judge their actions when you haven't came from the same place as them,
Do you know the difference between reality and fantasy? As an artist their supposed to make their tales seem as real as possible, It's not their fault if idiots run with it,
Music's main purpose isn't to be used as a teaching tool,
The fact that you think their music is crappy is irrelevant cause that's your opinion,
And I like how you left out the fact that they rap about:
Religion
War
Love
Family
and the consequences that could result from the actions that they speak on.
