I've been lifting for about 6 years. I've done deadlift for the majority of that period. I've done it pretty heavy for the majority of the period as well. I usually keep good form, but I had a mental lapse today.
I felt a pop in my lower back and had to drop it and myself to the floor. I can walk around and the pain is slowly decreasing, but it's pretty sore in the lower back. What did I do?

That sucks. Should probably get it checked out instead of asking SOHH meatheads.
I guess thats why I don't do heavy deadlifting since I could never get my form right.

co-sign... The max i do lifting period is 2 plates....And i usually stretch a few hours before i work out and a few minutes prior to the exercise...maybe you didnt stretch enough.......well the thing to do is RICE and probably see a doctor.....
if something popped you better take a trip to the dr.

I'm fairly sure it's a slipped disc. I'm thinking / hoping even though it seemed major at the time, it's a minor problem. After some ibuprofen, icing, and heat, the pain has gone down to a minor soreness. I'm able to walk fine and I can still go down into the deadlift position as long as I'm not bending my back at all. I'm gonna wait it out at this point because my insurance is screwed and I'd probably have to pay out of pocket to get it fixed, then reimbursed later, which is a nightmare.
I'll probably take a couple weeks off lifting until I feel totally healed and ease myself back into things. I'll probably not go heavy on deadlift anymore either. :sadcam:

just retire from it, its not worth the risk. you dont want back problems, you'll be in pain for the rest of your life

Its a shame because Deadlifts are supposedly one of the best lifts you can do and at the same time the most risky.

I blew my back completely out a few years ago doing deadlifts. now i don't fukk with them at all. i had the bar, perfect form, but on the way up it felt like i got blasted in the back with a fukkin shotgun. the worst pain of my life. it was crazy, cause i dropped the bar, then i stumbled to the wall and just leaned on it cause i couldn't move. my entire body heated up like crazy...i was sweatin fukkin bullets and i couldn't see straight. i honestly thought i was gonna pass out.
the next few weeks were hell. i couldn't even bend down to flush the toilet. i never went to the see the doctor or nothing. just let the shyt heal on itself. still got back problems to this day though. even if i lift extremely light on deadlifts i'll get pain. a few months ago i was ballin and i reached down real quick to get the ball and my shyt gave out again...not like the first time but still bad. i had to be helped just to get in & out of the car. was out of commission for like 2 weeks. the shyt is weird cause my back don't hurt at all most of the time...even when i'm doing really active shyt...but every now & then the pain will just come out of nowhere. i gotta make sure to stretch before i do anything that will put strain on my back. i'm 22 with back problems like an old ass man. i think something might need to be repaired in there but just don't feel like goin through that bullshyt right now.
but does anybody know if i would be coo to do squats?....i know deadlifts and squats are the most important exercises for overall strength but i can't do deadlifts anymore, and i at least wanna be able to do squats. i'm scared i'ma blow my shyt out again though.

I'd definitely go to a specialist and get that checked out. You don't want those pains for the rest of your life and the older you get, the worse it will get and the longer it will take to heal.
If you're going real light on deads and it's hurting, and if you are blowing your back out bending over to get a ball, I'd say you're in pretty bad shape. You could probably do some light to moderate squats because it's a different motion that throws out your back on deads, but from what you've described, I wouldn't risk it, even if you have perfect form and moderate weight.
As for me. . .
Day 3 update.
Pain is still just a moderate tightness in the lower back. I can still move about with relative ease and little pain. I think I have my strained the boys because there is a heavy feeling down there.
Now that I've gathered more advice, I doubt it's a slipped disc. I'm hoping I didn't do as much damage as initially thought.

Glad to see it's not a slipped disc, that would suck.
But not to jack your thread but I think I threw my shoulder outta whack doing deltoid raises. The pain isn't unbearable but it's enough for me to not throw my punches like I want to. Anyway I can alleviate the pain?
once you go heavy its better to change your style than increase the weight.(romanian deadlifts, single leg etc)
i dont see the point to continuously going higher with weight when your at that point unless youre a bodybuilder/offensive lineman

I was on the 2nd set midway through.

I have sciatica and that shyt can suck when it acts up. I now do hypers 3x a week and some abs to keep my lowerback in check.
First time I felt it was when I was doing squats. Was not a pleasant experience. Lower back pain is horrendous. Im 30 now and I have had issues on and off since my early 20s.
Could have stemmed from a car accident I was involved in in high school. It could also be my height also, having to bend/crouch doing yardwork or something isnt fun at 6ft 3

I'm in the process of healing up a lower back now which was most likely due to over stain from deadlifting. It's amazing what can happen if you barely break form. That one extra rep wasn't worth it. Never again. I'm not goin above 225 once I start back up.
But yea, see a sports doctor. They'll guide you. Gave me some cream and gave me a physical therapy spot to go to starting monday.
If this doesn't help anything he'll probably do what he did last time I had this problem in high school... injections.

Did they inject into a nerve? My boy said his doctor was going to do that to kill a nerve that was acting up or something like that

What exercises can you do to re-enforce your back to prevent strains from DLs? Hypers? SLDL?

Nah, I'm pretty sure it was a cortisone shot. This was back senior year high school during football season. During the first game I caught some serious back spasms after a long TD and was out for the game. Went to the doc over the next few days and he gave me the option to be aggressive or not with the healing. Naturally I wanted to get the fukk back out there and I was 17 so I took the aggressive approach. Gave me a series of shots over the span of 2 weeks that covered my lower left back and I was fine for years til the beginning of this year :sadcam:
Pretty sure it was deadlifts.
That "kill a nerve thing" sounds ideal, especially if he has a bulging disk that's pinching a nerve.

Keep it conditioned and warm up to heavy weights.
My favorite thing is hypers. Get's not better.
