I'm getting ready to join a gym this week(Sugar Ray Leonard's) and i've been taking the time to work more on my calistetics(sp?) so I can be prepared for the grueling few months of getting into proper condition. I quit smoking weed and drinking so I could get myself in great condition ASAP.
So far i'm doing:
1 round of Shadow Boxing
200 jabs with each arm
100 pushups
2 minute planks
Ab Ripper X
Anything else I should do to better prepare myself? I've been watching a lot of matches to study ring movement and how to keep the proper stance, Sugar Ray Robinson is a big help. Your help is most appreciated fellow fighters.

Run niqqa run!!! Thats the main thing. You GOTTA run. Also jump rope for 3 rounds and do 3 rounds of shadow boxing with 3lb. weights. Leave all that other stuff about stances, until you get to the gym.

How far should I run cuz I got a treadmill for that? Is a mile good? I ain't got no jumprope so I was gonna do that at the gym.

Roadwork not treadmill. The difference is huge. Get on that road. I cant tell you how far to run, only you know that. but run at least a mile.

On and off since '88. Yeah I know niqqa you aint gotta say it:laugh:
But I hate road work too with a passion but that shyt brings results quick. Someone with a trained boxing eye can always tell if you aint been putting road work in, dont be the one caught slippin". Keep that "I'll do anything thats needed" attitude cause you gonna need it when shyt gets rough and boy it GETS ROUGH. Ever been dead tired with 5 rounds to go and still gotta fight to win? You still gotta think when you are dead tired and that shyt is hard. Let's not forget you are still getting punched. Also the best part about boxing is the boxing. The workouts can be a drag if you arent focused or in it for a purpose. Just holla at me and I got you with any kind of advice.

How do you train in order to keep your hands up. As the fight goes on you feel inclined to drop your arms occasionally like........fukkkk.

We always did 3 rounds of just footwork in the ring, holding up 3-5lb dumbbells over our heads with our arms straight up. Shyt hurts like hell. Yeah I know what you mean though, I usually drop my hands and take a quick step back to regroup. Some dudes I see at the gym never get arm weary and that shyt is natural I guess.

Are you boxing to be in shape or to fight?
Either way boxing training is grueling. Keep running, doing situps, and work the jumprope like a madman.
I swear my trainer used to just have us running and doing jumprope for hours. I was like "wtf nicca? when we gone box"
Also, you'll quickly learn that hitting the bags is pretty tiring as well. Nothing will get u in shape like boxing....

Yeah, dudes gotta understand that it takes a while before you actually box. depending on if you wanna compete or do it just to get in shape. I rmember 2 years ago when I started back (again) since I was new to the gym my trainer assumed that I didnt know how to box so he had me jump rope and shadow box. but after he saw me hit the punching bag he told me to go to the double end bag (the California bag) and do 1 round. Long story short, the next 10 minutes I was sparring with some dude in the ring. Dudes on the side thought he showed me favoritism because they have yet to hit the ring after a couple of weeks of training.

This is a must. I been boxing off and on since I was young. You have to get them shoulders ready(Funny sh1t is you get in the ring that sh1t still dont matter:laugh: You be like wtf. I did all that work and still cant keep my arms up).
Another thing is if you training to box for rec or whatever. Dont let them feed you to the wolves. you dont know how many times trainers throw fighters in the ring when they wasnt ready. Do it at your pace. Do your road work, work on your technique and foot work. Those are the most important. Nothing worst then gettin hit with a soft azz punch and you get sit on your azz because you cross your feet.

Yeah, they told me at Sugar Ray's that it'll take me about 3 months to actually get in the ring or depending on what the trainers say. I'm already sensing that this is gonna be some brutal stuff, i'm gasping for air off the added workouts i'm doing but i'll live. I'ma fight for recreation but if i'm really good then i'll try to make some money off of it.

No, tell them that you wanna train to compete, that way they would move you along faster. Meaning your workouts would be harder BUT they would pay more attention to you. When they find out that aperson wants to do it for rec, man they dont give 2 shyts about what you do. Niqqa aint nothing like sparring baby! Thats shyt is fun, watch you'll see.

This is true. They will def not give you your money worth. Theyll tell you hit the heavy bag, Dbl end bag and the speed bag and then send yo azz home. make sure you gets some pad work. Yeah it look easy but if you never did it before it will wear yo azz out. Im talking about blocking punches and throwing combos all while he is moving.

Yeah dudes really dont understand how hard competitive boxing is. Your last sentence tells me that you do. Because people dont realize punching IS THE EASY PART. Wait until he spars without punching, where all he can do is use defense to and footwork to survive. Niqqa gonna be like:unsure::(

In boxing you wont have any huge advantages over someone fighting in your weight class. Most dudes your size are fast, so it would be 2 small and light dudes fighting each other. I would just work on my power (extended heavybag work and weighted shadowboxing). You can also use this for advice

First day gone, it was hard as hell but I had so much fun. Can't wait to go back tomorrow. The warmup is absolutely barbaric but I got through it, worked on my stance, jab, and power punch and was finished. I still had energy to keep going if they had wanted me to. Anyone that wants to do this that has always though to should do it, you'll love it if you have the right attitude.

Day Two, yall ever jump rope without a jump rope?
Worked more on my jab and one-two combo. My biggest weakness is balance and movement, so i've been working on my feet and practicing moving in the stance since I got in the house. I've gotten better with some work. My lung were burnin' by the end of training but I always seem to recover upon 30 minutes of leaving. My supplements are helping, but when I get my lungs right they'll take me through the roof because of my eagerness to learn more.

Day Three, damn....
It just gets progressively harder. The warmup itself was hell, my trainer caught me walking on the treadmill so he added 5 more minutes, sped up the running, and added an incline. 20 minutes of pure hell, I kept talking to myself for motivation and to take my mind off of my guts wanting to earl out. I made it through with my lungs intact, mainly because I was smart enough to breathe through my nose most of the way so I didn't cramp up as much. 10 rounds of throwing jabs because my fundamentals still aren't as crisp as they should be.
But i'm still alive and hungry for more.

Yeah, I ****ed up. I jogged for 5 minutes then started walking, he came over and upped the ante on my ass. For now the trainers want me to do the treadmill and bike, i'm gonna try to work my way outside and i'm willing to bet outside is much better cuz the air will be fresher.

Yes, take a day. Dont overtrain and dont rush your progress. Have fun with it. Let your body lead you, but sometimes you have to use mind over body. Quick, you aint training to fight Mayweather. Also get on that road and run, you dont have to tell your trainers that you are running. You gotta get all of that smoke outta ya body and running on the road is the quickest way to clear up them lungs and building stamina. Dont do marathons, start with 10 blocks and walk back. Baby steps because it's not easy. Either that or hit up a park where you can do wind sprints, preferably an football field. Do ten 100 yard wind sprints. As far a stomach cramps stop running on your cycle niqqa! Nah just playing," seriously that will be the only joke told here today, you gotta study ya arts, I studied under Bruce Lee, he was on the 4th and I was on the 3rd". Day 4, when the trainers away i'ma take it ea-say...
I got in late cuz I almost ain't go so my body could rest, but my overeager ass had to get some work in. My trainer called out so I took it light on my warmup since the gym was closing soon. One of the old fighters took notice of me, gave me tips on my jab. I've made good progress since yesterday and one of the other trainers really helped me with my feet and positioning. Afterwards, the old fighter let me know that i've really got something cuz i'm quick and don't hesitate with the jab but i've gotta learn to make it more natural since i'm throwing it a bit robotic. Basically he let me know I had to gain control of the punch so it would come out better, but he really encouraged me a lot. Good to have since i'm already encouraging myself like crazy as is.
Tomorrow is a rest day, but smh....peep my thread in TLR...i'm bout to sin.

My *****z, how do you deal with elbow soreness? My jab and straight is gettin cleaner and cleaner by the day, I did about 5 rounds of them and I was throwing'em so fast my elbow has gotten sore. I think it might be a tendon or ligament whichever is around there.
I'm thinkin once i've gotten enough pushup work under my belt i'll be able to better control my punches and they'll be much faster than they already are and more accurate.
