They gotta be American, have to have release their first major label LP after 2001, and they must be good.
Hands down ... Killswitch Engage. They sound just as good live as they do on their albums, they write the perfect melodies, perfect catchy choruses. Heavy breakdowns. Heavy verses, got that circle pit action going now and then. they got it all.
EDIT
You can nominate other ones. I'll take out all the Remains and put in "other"
Oh seems liek the poll is locked. oh well.

Good thread.. Been meaning to post up a poll like this for a while, but most of the cats on here would probably ignore it.. Anyways, fukk it...

Killswitch.. Good to somewhat great.. They're just okay to me, I preferred Jesse Leach over the black dude they got now..

Shadows Fall.. Another okay choice, come off as very 80ish heavy metal IMO, which probably wouldn't be a problem if I didn't loathe most of that stuff...

Mastodon.. Never could get into them after Leviathan, that album is a monster though...

All That Remains.. Only heard The Fall of Ideals.. LOVED it.. Great record, usually I'm turned off by clean vox, but with these guys I'm willing to overlook that.. Wouldn't say these guys are the best on this list but that album is one of my favorites from this decade.. Even though you can't, why would you wanna remove this band from the poll?.. Hands down they are better than the last 4 you got on that list.. Anyways, moving on...

As I Lay Dying.. Thrown in the same category as ATR for me, only heard An Ocean Between Us, thought it was fire.. And just like ATR, there's a screaming/clean vox sound going on, which usually irks me, but it works for them.. Would have liked to have heard a little more from them, but I can't take Christian metal seriously...

Trivium and Chimaira.. Heard a lot from both.. Didn't stick.. Oh well.. Have never even heard of the last two choices you got up there, which leads us to...

Lamb of God.. Probably just gonna go with them as my pick.. Been a fan since they were called Burn The Priest.. They just keep on bringing it, louder and faster and heavier than previously heard.. Kinda remind me a lot of Slayer in that respect... 1

It's sort of bothering me that Mastadon is winning the polls. Typical Alt. SOHH heads. Can someone explain to me why Mastadon is the best out of that lsit.

there are plenty other really good American Metal Bands i could have added like Darkest hour, Deadtofall (though their last release didn't really showcase what their made of), Haste the Day (very good hardcore mix with clean vocal), who else?

I can't figure that one out either.. If I had to hazard a guess it would be because Mastodon seems to be the only "metal" band that Pitchfork sheds any light on, no one else on here has probably heard any of the other stuff...

Yeah I notice Mastdadon breaking into the punk sites and alternative music sites. Weird. They definitely not the best out there though.

^^^ They are a british band, this thread is supposed to be str8 American metal.. They suck anyways, one step away from a full fledged emo band.. Moving on, if we were to include bands from other regions my vote would go to Meshuggah...

If it was other regions, i would go with In Flames. Out of their whole catalogue they only put out 1 maybe 2 bad albums.
As for Bullet, I feel they sound pretty simialr to Funeral For My friend, just better drumming and melodies. Heavier than funeral too.

Bullet for My Valentine - Waking the Demon is my shyt though. Won't link it up since they aint american. lol.

so are the drummers from every other band I mentioned. Just the Mastadon drummer does a lot more fills , sometimes is just sounds like noise.

all the Mastadon fans, explain your votes.

That's amazing, but dude from Slipknot and mudvayne can play just as good, Mastadon to me doesn't make good songs. I like a lto of the tracks on that Blood moutnain album or whatever it was called, but othewise, I can't get into them.
As I Lay Dying - the Darkest Night

Very catchy, sort of soft, but has it heavy moemnts.

As ILay Dying - 94 Hours (Heavier, faster, crazier) CHECK OUT THE DOUBLE PEDALS in the SECOND VERSE fastest shyt you'll ever hear. And this is even crazy grindcore, deathcore, whatever, it's just metal, but with soem hectice parts.

They were my favorite tied with Killswitch after Ember and ascendancy dropped. The Crusade didn't have as much replay value, and Shogun is just too long. Songs are overdone. I still love this group though.
