Release Notes:
Octahedron is the stunning new album from The Mars Volta. An album
heady with the emotion and high-drama that has always been the band's
trademark, their newfound simplicity and focus has delivered some of
the most immediate and powerful songs in their discography. The album
opens with the tender ache of "Since We've Been Wrong", Cedric's
keening vocal establishing a mood that's deeply blue, powerfully
melancholic, a suckerpunch that hits every bit as hard as Octahedron's
unashamed rockers (the gleaming futuristic funk of "Teflon", the tense
chase-music of "Cotopaxi"). Pulling back from the full-tilt
experimentation of previous releases, the album invests its energies in
Omar's gift for songcraft, for swooning guitar runs of high tension and
emotive power ("Luciforms"' epic riffage), and for the nagging hooks
and melodies that wreath the churning rhythms of "Desperate Graves".

ATDI were good but come on.. It's been like 9 years now, let 'em go.. TMV are like 10x the band ATDI could never be.. Let them rest in post-hardcore hell.. Slightly off topic though for any fans of ATDI Sparta's first two albums are actually pretty good.. Definitely worth your attention...

But relationship in command was so fukkin good. great crossover album. they were about to blow, they just needed one more album like Relationship.

i bought the first Mars Volta album, thought the bass lines were cool (I'm a bassist), but I couldn't really dig the music overall, so I gave up on them. Songs were too long, i didn't udnerstand what they were talking about (ATDI never really made sense either).

How many albums TMV up to, like 4?

I listened to it. It's good... but of course it's not better than Deloused.

i like Bedlam and Frances more, but then again I like the "random noise" and multiple guitar solos and shyt. And this album reminds me that TMV could get a bunch of songs just by reworking Omar solo joints

Is weird to me, TMV really typify everything that's wrong with prog rock; indulgent, overly long and incredibly pretentious, but i can't help liking their music. There's just a sorta energy to it that's likable, no matter how far out they get. And Omar is probably one of the best musicians of his generation.

Good thing is, this album seems a lot less indulgent than their past stuff. Less noodling and more song craft.

The ambient synth intro on Since We've Been Wrong totally reminds me of Pink Floyd's Shine On You Crazy Diamond

Well, seeing that you named Tool and Opeth, i'd recommend Isis, who are sorta proggy experimental metal. Checkout their albums "Oceanic" & "In The Absence of the Truth". But i ain't really into too much really heavy ish. But for just some overall modern bands i'd recommend;

TV On The Radio (Check out "Return To Cookie Mountain" & "Dear, Science"

Battles (Check out "Mirrored")

And actually an album i've been listening to a lot is King Khan And His Shrine's "What Is!", which is this awesome garage rock/soul kinda thing. Don't know if you're into that but here's a link;

As far as older progressive stuff goes Frank Zappa and King Crimson are always good places to start.

Frank, some of these are with his band The Mothers of Invention others are solo records - Apostrohe('), Freak Out, We're Only in It For The Money, Sheik Yerbouti, Guitar

King Crimson - In the Court Of, Red

You want good newer prog, check out a band called Porcupine Tree. Steven Wilson, the lead singer/plays guitar has written songs for Opeth, and executive produced atleast one of their albums if I'm not mistaken.
